However it has evolved quite a bit from the days it was played with a round ball and couldn’t be picked up(sounds more like soccer)

Those who “played for pay” and increased popularity were generally from the lower classes. And it will remain popular with the lower classes as a sport and as a way to advance in status and wealth. The “toffs” in the collegiate ranks can play tiddlywinks and think themselves tough.

I’ll hope Americans play football and develop into men..

Lol, I guess you don’t know that collegiate football back in the early 20th century was considered so violent, there were threats to ban it.
