One of the most striking was his first visit to an American super market, and how unbelievable it was.
He was later visited at one point by completely lockstep communist aunt and uncle from then Soviet Union, and when they were taken to an American super market (I'll paraphrase here, but this is quite close) they began to cry and said in Russian that their lives had been wasted.
And now, however, something that I simply do not understand. The current Russian emigres (if I understand reports from friends and acquaintances correctly) somehow tend to be anti-American.

Back in the late 1970s a friend of mine had her grandmother in from Yugoslavia. I was with them when we visited our local mega-Mart. First she started filling her cart with everything she could see. I asked why and was told the old lady was convinced it would all be gone soon.
Her granddaughter explained it was like this every day and she started crying and repeating the same phrase over and over. I asked what she was saying.
Lies...its all lies.

It used to be that the character of America was so overall superior to that of the countries of immigrants that most were essentially converted by it. But when it becomes more and more like a prostitute, less will love it as a mother or see it as worthy alternative for their patriotic affections.
