U.S. military personnel of all ranks are feeling increasingly alienated from their own country, and are becoming both more conservative and more politically active than ever before. Do they see America clearly?

The mystery seems to be located in the officer ranks. Before the GI Bill, academics were expected to be poor and undistinguished. Since WW II, they are expected to get rich and be rock stars.
The issue seems to be located in the contamination of military colleges with venom from mainstream academia, which was taken over by the effects of Cultural Communism (the Frankfurt School) via "The New Left" of Herbert Marcuse, with the phony intellectual foundation of Michel Foucault.
US citizens are feeling increasingly alienated from their own country, and are becoming both more conservative and more politically active than ever before.
Because they see what the Bush League Republicans and Democrats are doing to their country.
Flooding it with foreigners to steal it from the citizens and subsume it to the UN as part of the Bush Plan for the New World Order.
In addition, as one former Marine explained to me, military people are accustomed to being cared for by a large, well-funded federal bureaucracy. They tend to see political issues as remediable by putting the administrative state in charge, with the right kind of people at the top.
I think you’re making it too complicated.
The military is a top down hierarchy just like any socialist economic command society. People get used to that, also it encourages maintaining the status quo. Paradigm breakers are definitely frowned upon, look at Bill Mitchell, Patton, etc. Also this is necessary when you have a war. Consistent, reliable, repeatable behavior is absolutely required for a military to function. Not the best way to run a society though, look at Sparta! Its societal militaristic customs produced a ferocious military but as conditions changed both outside threats & economic it couldn’t or was too slow to change.
Basically a military is a bureaucracy with guns, bureaucracies tend not to be dynamic.
My instinct tells me that where a particular military member stands on the left/right continuum would probably depend on how far that person stands from the tip of the spear.
Special Forces, Marines, etc, are more conservative than the officer class, logistics personnel, etc.
A generalization that is generally true?
When my son was in the Marines he said most of his ncos and officers were conservatives. They talked a lot about Obama turning the military against Americans and what theyd do.
Don’t forget to measure any left/right differences as a whole between the Marines and Army vs. Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force.

Same feed back... Obama turned the military into a jobs program. Also, the people who use the weapons tend to be conservative and the people who use the benefits tend to be liberal... whether they are padding their political resume or just trying to get their college paid.
Most of the Democrat military personnel I knew were Democrat because their family voted Democrat.
It’s a fascinating question. I’ve wondered the same for a long time.
I know a retired special ops high ranking officer who keeps his political views very closely guarded but is ultimately more liberal. I know another who when I’ve had conversations with him claims conservatism but also once said he found nothing wrong with Obama having met him on the job. Both of these guys have seen extensive combat.
OK...that’s 2.
I think that’s the same with most Democrats. They pay little attention to politics, and just vote Democrat at election time because their parents and grandparents voted Democrat. They don’t pay enough attention to realize just how corrupt and totalitarian the Democrats have become, and the Democrat media sure won’t tell them.

When Will Americans Have Had Enough?
Moot Question: Looks Like...???

Rank, age, and distance from the risk or experience of combat surely explain a lot — and the distinctions carry over to civilian life. Years ago, conservative friends who were Vietnam veterans explained that American Legion members could be politically squishy, but that the combat veteran VFW — the Veterans of Foreign Wars — was where the reliable conservatives were to be found. I soon realized that as a rule, the men I knew and admired when growing up were combat veterans — and staunch conservatives, of course.
One day at the office, a co-worker asked me how it was that I served multiple tours in Vietnam as a combat infantryman and I didnt get PTSD. My rather flippant answer was I didnt get PTSD in Vietnam, I gave it.
However, this PTSD question made me wonder what PTSD is and what the symptoms are, so I did a little research on the subject and found that I did indeed possess symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) concerning a traumatic and very stressful incident that occurred during my last tour in Vietnam. I was a professional soldier when the traumatic incident occurred and had accumulated several tours in Vietnam engaged occasionally in close combat with a vicious and cunningly capable enemy, but the traumatic event was not as a result of close combat with this enemy.
One day when I was totally focused on closing with and destroying the enemy, something caught my eye, I looked around and found a new enemy had unexpectedly appeared behind me; it was the American people. The same Democrat Party who had originally sent me to Vietnam promising that, We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty, had now sided with the Communists I was fighting. They were parading in the streets of the United States under a Viet Cong flag, were quoting from Maos Red Book, and were spitting on and flinging insults at returning Vietnam Veterans. Then, a Democrat led Congress cut off funding for the Vietnam War, American combat troops were withdrawn and we abandoned a valiant ally to their fate.
I was ordered out of the country in 1972, and when I arrived at Travis Air Force Base/ Oakland Army Terminal, purposely in the dark of the night, I was advised to change out of my uniform and put on civilian clothing to avoid being attacked by the American people when I entered San Francisco. I was not at all surprised when a few decades later in 2008 these same people elected a Marxist-Communist as President of what was once my country.
Yes, the deep, burning hatred I feel for the Democrat Party to this day could be diagnosed as a symptom of PTSD, and I assure you, every Vietnam Veteran I know feels the same way.
Only liberals I saw in the Army worked in Supply or Admin.
It’s by design. Democrats have intentionally packed the military with Leftists, in order to neutralize an enormous bastion of rational thinking and voting. That’s why they were so eager to bring women, homosexuals, transsexual, et al. into the military: to nullify the military as an anti-Democrat Party voting block.
The story of the Democrat Party’s turn to the Left could be traced back to the late 1960s. The First Plot Point at the close of Act I would be their nomination of radical leftist George McGovern as presidential candidate in 1972. By that time their embrace of the Communists was deep.
