ver the last few decades, the number of college administrators has grown far more than the numbers of students and faculty. Amid this administrative bloat, the greatest growth has been in “diversity” officials. Even community colleges have begun hiring Chief Diversity Officers (CDO).
A persistent question, however, is whether having a CDO and other diversity administrators accomplishes anything of educational value. American colleges and universities are as inclusive and “welcoming” to students and faculty of all races and backgrounds as any institutions on the planet, so exactly how does a CDO make things any better?
More than ten years ago, Peter Wood and Ashley Thorne of the National Association of Scholars asked ”What Does a Chief Diversity Officer Actually Do?” and in an “emperor is wearing no clothes” fashion, answered that their jobs are pointless and self-serving. Among their observations were that the CDO must “ignore or trivialize any rational objections to the institutionalization of the diversity ideology” and to “keep the empty suppositions (about the benefits of diversity) going by repeating them tirelessly.”
Wood and Thorne, in sum, found no educational value at all in college diversity bureaucracies.
Another skeptic regarding the CDO is David Frum.
Writing two years ago in The Atlantic, Frum noted that what many minority students (and many non-minority ones) really need if they’re to succeed in college is not a “Chief Diversity Officer,” but intensive teaching and mentoring. Unfortunately, diversity officers don’t involve themselves with such nuts and bolts matters.
Instead, Frum wrote, “The pages of the diversity officers’ journal reveal more fascination with increasing demand for their own employment—via compulsory programs in ‘cultural competence’ for example—than in the hard work of mentoring and tutoring.”

What Do College ‘Chief Diversity Officers’ Accomplish?
Nothing positive or valuable and that’s the whole point.
Lining their pockets with the ludicrous amount of money they’re paid for a fascist job.
The job of the Chief Diversity Officer is to try to minimize EEOC lawsuits against the place, and also keep the Social Justice types from complaining and rioting.
We have a winnah!
They, along with other useless administers, take money away from faculty.
Well, they make sure that white kids from suburbs never see the inside of institutions their parents paid for.
I work at a University in the Northeast. We of course have an Office of Diversity. about 12 people in the dept. No whities.
Oh, you mean educational accomplishment. Can't help you there, sorry.
They accomplish satisfying government bureaucrats, so that more government money can be funneled to the school.
These types of jobs (CDO’s, Diversity Trainers, etc.) are just disguised bribes used as protection money to forestall broader shakedowns. It’s like putting Don Corleone’s third cousin on the payroll with no actual work required.
They take money away from real education and toss it down a rat hole.

I’ve been reading a lot about this at my Alma Mater (University of Northern Colorado), and it’s exactly what you said.
Diversifying their finances and ensuring no thought diversity gets in the door. They are the conformity police.
They make a lot of money, much more than their skill sets could possibly justify in a free country.
...Diversity is an anti-religion, and anti-ideology, a nepotism which promotes everything except one's own family.
Diversity therefore equals the destruction of any and all religions and of all positive ideologies.
Because Diversity can only be destructive: whatever IS is insufficiently or inexactly diverse.
Whatever IS must therefore be destroyed in order to make it MORE Diverse.
And there is no conceivable or measurable end to it. Yesterday's Diversity is today's intolerable lack of Diversity.
Diversity is the destruction of Good; and it is the destruction of all types of Good - however defined. All are chewed up and spat out by Diversity.
Diversity is the promotion of chaos by the destruction of Good; and then there-naming of chaos as Good.
Ask Communist Russia about having a party official as a part of all business and military units, it’s the same thing. They insure Political Correctness is followed instead of common sense.
Their function is to politically sanitize universities and make any who do not agree too fearful to speak.
They’re doing a great job.
It is another $250,000 a year government job with a six figure life time pension that is only given to “diverse” applicants. This is the real reason college tuition costs have sky rocketed.
