As of today, recreational cannabis consumption is legal in Canada. While many Canadian citizens and companies will be celebrating the reform, not to mention preparing to capitalize on this green-golden opportunity, the Canadian oil and gas industry will be ringing in the new era with considerably less enthusiasm.
Canadian oil companies and workers unions are busy scrambling to finalize a plan to maintain safe operating standards in an era of legal and easily attainable marijuana. In Canadas oil sands, workers perform risky maneuvers and operate heavy equipment daily, making health and safety an especially critical issue. Legal weed poses a unique challenge to an industry that has long maintained a zero-tolerance policy for drugs, alcohol, and general on-site impairment in Fort McMurray's oil sands.

It’s Trudy’s childhood Dream don’t you know
The Law of Unintended Consequences is about to strike Canada right between the eyes.
Maybe we’ll read all about in the daily Canadian blog posts here on FR...
And an employer’s nightmare.
We have the same issue in our refinery plants and any site dealing with gasoline and other refined oil products.
Random drug testing will weed out the potheads.

Howe is it different from how they deal with alcohol? Ive never heard of MJ residing in fat like LSD
Nope. There is no test for determining marijuana impairment.
And just try to dismiss a Canadian unionized worker now for testing positive.
THC resides in fatty tissues (and in hair follicle).
LSD, to my knowledge crystallizes in the spinal column; could be wrong as its been a long time since I did any research on it.
Don’t test for it.
If you discover somebody is impaired, fire them on the spot. First time, every time.
“Random drug testing will weed out the potheads.”
Soon you would not have enough workers.
In jurisdictions where it is legal, people should be assessed on performance, not whether they have THC metabolites in their urine, which could be over 30 days old.
Back when I was in construction, I refused to work with guys who were stoned or drunk.
I can’t imagine working on an oil rig, surrounded by flammables with impaired workers.
You are one small mistake away from dying in a very bad way.
interesting _ I thought LSD was in the fatty tissues which is why some people experience episodes later in life after they had stopped actively using. Hadn’t heard of the crystallization before.
I am at a plant in Montreal, they take hash breaks..not kidding

I was walking through a flour mill in Jamaica years ago and the crew was sitting on some flour bags smoking pot, I asked the owner how do you deal with this, he said, if I fire them, they know something about the work, if fired he would have new smokers that knew nothing about the job..he said let them smoke..it works best
a true professional would not want to be impaired, for their and others good
Alcohol is on their zero tolerance list and is legal. Shouldn’t be a challenge.
