In fact look at Marion Barry. Convicted on drug charges involving crack cocaine he spend 6 months in prison, but was nevertheless re-elected as mayor of DC by a Democrat base which apparently thought he represented their way of thinking better than anyone else. Look at the Kennedy clan.

Being caught publically lying is a resume enhancer for Democrat politicians.
