Mormon Church president tells women to get off social media for 10 days

For over a year since the #MeToo movement began, women have turned to social media with stories of sexual harassment and calls for reform that have powerfully reshaped our society. In recent weeks, women have flooded Facebook and Twitter and Instagram with pleas to #BelieveWomen, as Brett Kavanaugh gained a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court amid turmoil over accusations of sexual assault.

And with just weeks to go before the Nov. 6 midterms, women are sure to make their presence known online in an election largely centered on female candidates' surging campaigns and female voters' intensifying anger.

At this time, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued an unusual demand: Women, get off social media.

Russell Nelson, the 94-year-old who became president of the church in January, proclaimed Saturday that all Mormon women should try a 10-day "fast" from social media.

His call for a fast has nothing to do with politics, many Mormons say. Still, the timing is a cause of consternation to some.

"I invite you to participate in a 10-day fast from social media and from any other media that bring negative and impure thoughts to your mind," Nelson said as he addressed the women-only session at the church's General Conference on Saturday. "Pray to know which influences to remove during your fast. The effect of your 10-day fast may surprise you. What do you notice after taking a break from perspectives of the world that have been wounding your spirit? Is there a change in where you now want to spend your time and energy? Have any of your priorities shifted just a little?"

Many women who find that their priorities do call for them to be on social media right now....

I like Mormons generally, but I think he’s got to come up with better solutions than singling out a gender for action.

Kind of a misleading title. He didn’t “tell them” or command them (as the article puts it), he “invited” them.

That’s probably good advice for anybody who gets online every single day. Maybe it doesn’t have to be 10 days, but for a while.

When I stop making excuses and drive myself to a 24Fitness Gym, I’ve begun to turn my cell phone off and leave it in the car. I close the car door, and walk away, just like that! I have to remind myself that I don’t need it near me all the time. I’m not THAT important, that I need a Red Batphone always at the ready!

If he told men to stay off of social media as well, then I wouldn’t have a problem with it. This however is about as sexist as it comes. Not a fan.

Russell Nelson, the 94-year-old who became president of the church in January,

I'm generally not a fan of the doctrines and history of the LDS church, but it's kind a cool that they let a guy have the top job at 94. Most anyone who's ever had a parent or grandparent in their 90s will tell you that it's a very tough age to be. The overwhelming majority of 90-somethings are physically and/or mentally incapable of handling control of a large, international organization.

Yeah. I think it’s a good idea for everyone to take a rest from all of this now and then. But why single out women?

He was speaking to an all-women's group at the time. That might have something to do with it. If he was giving some kind of general statement to everyone and then specifically called out women for this, I would agree.

I'm not Mormon and I'm not defending the guy; I'm just trying to be rational and fair.

For your consideration, FRiends.

A [big] church elder calls for 10 days of darkness for his female congregants.

Maybe a good idea to back off social media for ten days. But only the chicks.

You women need to stop being informed. And socializing. And...stuff. According to the LDS/Mormon Church Elder.

He’s 94.

Does he Tweet? ;)

FReeQ on,

I agree. A 94 year old has no business in that kind of position. As a figurehead, fine.

Yeah, well a woman at our church celebrated her 100th birthday this summer. She teaches a Sunday School class, and teaches a women’s Bible study twice a month. Plus, she’s always calling people who she knows are sick, and sends sympathy and get well cards to folks. So, I guess not everybody keels over when they reach 90. Just sayin...

People know journalists are liars and that they work to discredit all forms of Judeo-Christian religion. And yet, they read articles such as this and accept it, as written - then condemn the man as a sexist.

It is amazing.

[ Good idea? ]

I would do it if he could guarantee me a planet to rule over after I kick the bucket on earth without having to wear the magical under wear.

I kinda like the idea of running my own planet, I think I would duplicate the earth only I would enforce a standing order to kill all communists and any religious cult resembling Islam.

But no planet, no mas

He should have told both the women and men to take a social media break. The fact that he was addressing the women only is very patronizing.

Unfortunately this strongly feeds the perception that Mormon women are regarded as being beneath men, their main purpose being banging out as many babies as possible.
