Get an Sansa MP3 player you can put music and podcasts on it.

You can “grab” youtube videos and convert to MP3 https://freegrabapp.com/

There are soundcloud downloaders around too.

First off, congratulations on starting an exercise program. Now you have to keep at it. I lost 50 pounds over the course of a year getting ready for my walk of the Camino de Santiago and now that I am back I have taken up running, but it is like starting over and will probably take another year before I can run the types of terrain and distances I walked. Right now I am running 6 days a week, 7km a day at 155 steps per minute. I will keep the same pace until I get up to 10km then start working on my speed after that.

One thing I might suggest for yourself and anyone else who is on a walking or running program and has a smart phone is to look for an app called Charity Miles. You download the app, pick a charity and start walking. The app logs your miles and then one of their corporate sponsors makes a donation based on how far you walk. I am doing my running for the Wounded Warrior Project and my wife walks for the Alzheimer's Association in memory of her mother, who died from the disease.

I just saw this timely ARTICLE on Drudge about almost a third of the nation's youth who are disqualified from joining the military due to obesity.

We all have to die of something. If the caffeine, salt, alcohol, red meat, spicy foods, sugar, bacon or too much tv doesn't kill me first I guess that will do.

Caffeine, salt and red meet are all beneficial, so if you wish to check out soon, lay off of them!

Also, most spices, like cayenne, ginger, oregano, basil and garlic are clearly life extending substances.

It doesn’t take much searching to find that all of the things I mentioned will shorten your life and your original assertion that running will take years off of your life is a bunch of nonsense. It all depends on which articles you choose to believe, if any. Here’s an idea. You worry about what’s going to shorten your life and I’ll worry about mine.

Way to go. You’re the incredible shrinking man. Enjoy your cruise because you’re going to make it.

On occasion when I need to get my car fixed I walk back from the shop to my place a mile and a quarter. First 1/3 feels great, the next 2/3rds get a bit much but I have lots of energy the rest of the day and next.

I type this while sitting at my desk eating Lays potato chips.....

That is a good walk. About 4 years ago I was an overnight manager for WalMart in charge of the overnight crews we had.

I usually worked 4 days and 10 to 12 hour shifts.

I found I was walking on average about 16 miles a night. Could never relax or stop, always on the move.

I am also a type II diabetic and my A1C was normal and could just about eat anything I wanted. So that kind of exercise is great. Right now I am walking 3 miles a day.

Where do those studies come from and are they even accurate?

For about 25 years in and off I was a long distance jogger, average 3 miles several days a week. The last 18 years I converted to walking, just easier on the knees and ankles.

Now back to 3 miles a day from 2.5 miles a day. Any studies on walking?????????

Its not a study, just from answers that patients give to doctors prying questions, collated.

It can only be as accurate as the patients’ answers.

Explain why you can't walk. I have Type II and I walk 3 miles a day, up from 2.5 miles a day.

Do you have foot problems? One of the things that you can get is neuropathy problems, but believe me exercise can help with that. I had some but not anymore with all my walking. Exercise is the key component in battling and getting that under control.

As little as 30 minutes, 3 days a week can make a difference.

Laz, start small. Walk around the block or to the street corner if that’s all you can do right now.

How long did it take you to walk 30,000 steps? Are you retired?

I’ve done 15,000 to 17,000 step in a day (usually while on vacation), but my feet were SORE. I can’t imagine doing twice that in one day.

I’m walking more these days, trying to get 50000 steps a week with this pedometer.
