As many guns and calibers as I own and have owned I’m surprised I never owned a Whelen. I got into Weatherby’s right after I got out of the Army in 72 and it wasn’t long before I had a 340, from that point I just never looked farther. I do have an old Marlin chambered in 35 Rem that was my go to hog gun and it wasn’t that long ago I bumped my hog gun up to a DPMS 308. I didn’t have the 308 more than about 6 months and sold it, it just wasn’t a very user friendly rifle even with the ten round mag’s. It’s heavy and hung up on everything in the truck. If i got into a fair size sounder there would be brass all over the inside. That’s the only 308 I’ve ever owned and won’t own another, I have calibers that far surpass it’s performance which is mediocre at best compared to other 30 cals out there.
Big fan of Weatherby’s as well ...... have a Ruger Number 1 Tropical that was rechambered in .460 Wthby Mag . Felt recoil of a 30-06 is 16 pounds..... a .460 Weatherby Magnum is 116 pounds.
Used M1A’s in 7.62 for small munitions disruption (SMUD) process when I was active duty EOD. Still compete in leg matches up in Raton at the NRA Whittington Center using a M1A NM I’ve had for 40 plus years. Like the caliber for paper punching as Mexican Match Ammo was / is cheap and accurate at least for the leg matches.
Newest is a 7.62 LaRue Predatobr AR that just last week in Wayside TX , I dropped 25 hogs using 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match. I really like that rig for hogs. Have an extra upper receiver for the LaRue in 6.5 Creedmoor that gets a lot of use on song dogs that linger just out of range .
I just like to shoot ..... hunting, competition, or pounding steel at long distances. All that said my caliber I go to for Mule Deer, Elk and Moose is the.35 Whelen.
Buddy in Lindrith NM hunts Elk with the .340 Wthby Mag ...... says he hates to chase em. Never has to with that .340 Weatherby. Very very good caliber as well.
