The standard American has a 4.2-inch barrel in 9mm and a 4.5-inch pipe in .45. With a full magazine, the 9mm version offers an impressive 17+1-round capacity, and while the gun is great fun at the range, its a bit big to break into the main channel of the concealed carry market.
But Ruger was one step ahead, planning (and now offering) a compact version of the American semiauto pistol.
THE 9MM COMPACT VERSION of the American (the full-sized model is called the Duty) sports a 3.55-inch barrel (3.75inch in .45) with a length of just 6.65 inches.
Designing a carry gun is always a give and take with regard to overall size; small guns are easy to hide and carry, but they arent as comfortable to shoot or as accurate (in most cases) as larger, longer-barreled guns.
The American Duty pistol is a very comfortable gun to shoot at the range, with great sights and an excellent trigger that mate well with its grip geometry and control layout.
But it's big; too big for most people to carry.
The Compact, on the other hand, does a great job balancing on that middle ground that makes it just the right size for everyday concealment.
It weighs right around 29 ounces (a little more or less depending upon whether or not you opt for a manual safety) and measures again depending on your safety option...Read the rest of Ruger 9mm compact.
Thanks for posting. Be prepared BUMP!
Haven’t shot a Ruger center fire semi auto pistol in many years, the P series were nothing but ugly trotline weights. 4 years ago Ruger came on as a sponsor for the show and supplied us with a few rifles and even a few of the SR series rim fires. At the last show I looked at one of their SR9c’s and was kind of liking the feel of it (I’m a SIG guy who doesn’t like striker fired pistols or plastic). They sent me an SR9 and I gave it a pretty good workout on the ranch. It rode in a dusty old 4x4, got knocked around and even dropped a couple of times, once in the mud. The pistol never failed to fire or eject and it’s accuracy was within my standards (Not on par with my SIG’s but acceptable). They’ve come a long ways since the old P series. Their rifles are another story. I shoot Ruger American Predators for the show and they have been incredibly accurate, the 243 and the 22-250 both love Harnady ammo and since they’re also sponsors that’s a real plus. With the American models they finally put the damn safety back where it should have been. I’ve always liked the older tang safety rifles. Been a fan of their single action pistols for as long as I can remember, even used them on the show a couple of times. The 30 Carbine makes a heck of a varmint round, just make sure everybody including the camera man has hearing protection. I highly recommend any Ruger products.
I’ll stick with my Ruger LC9. Nice for EDC and is dependable as all gitout.

Got an LC9s. Very comfortable to carry.
Opted for the S&W bodyguard .380 over the LC9....however it was a very close decision.
Because...some days...you just want to feel fresh and light. =;^)
You’re 100% dead on w the tang safety.
Is is EXACTLY where it should be, and why on earth did they ever move it to the bolt???
Mehhh, I love me some Rugers but I am not a fan of striker fired pistols, of any make, or SAO pistols for concealed carry. A DAO or SA/DA pistol makes FAR more sense for 99.9% of the armed population.
Sorry. I just picked up a Walther CCP. Very sweet gun.
