I knew a lovely man who survived the Holocaust. He was the only one of his family to make it out of Theresienstadt alive.
He said to me once that the difference between the Gestapo and American law enforcement is that at least the Gestapo would knock on your door and give you a chance to answer it before they tried to break it down.

MeganC, I recall from decades ago my beloved advising me the people working in the FBI, Stasi, KGB, et al, were all the same type of people. I was clearly shocked and wondered out loud at the time about this man I choose to date. His reply? “Facts don’t change because you disagree and people are people.” Over the decades, I’ve come to realize he was spot-on and not just about that issue. Kind of irritating at times... LOL
