Today I learned you can register a patent for a device that doesn’t work.

Common practice. Done in high tech all the time.

It has been the case forever. You do not need a working device to obtain a patent.

A compact fusion reactor such as envisioned by Lockheed has a much greater chance of working than the “cold fusion” scams we have had long discussions of on freerepublic.

Talk about a golden age if it happens! The U.S. Should use such dominance to extend its superpower status for the next hundred years, and to exploit the resources of the Solar System.

Yes. It’s a device controlled by controller devices that we haven’t figured out how to control.

Yes. I will take all of the royalties on that.

And THEN you can sue the guy who copies it...:-)

OTOH, a patent can be invalidated when the claims are not workable...the USPTO does not really consider that in the examination process.

That is to say, good luck with your "fake" patent.

Case in point, the much celebrated "Hyper-Light-Speed Antenna", US Patent 6,025,810.

The present invention...takes a transmission of energy, and instead of sending it through normal time and space, it pokes a small hole into another dimension.. pure comedy gold.
