And before the shooting was over every German who could was falling all over themselves saying how much they had opposed Hitler until it became too obvious that if so many had opposed Hitler how then did he ever come to power? I knew quite a few WW2 vets who hated those Krauts bastards when they finally got into Germany in 1945. The little snot nosed Hitler Youth bastards would blow up a Sherman tank or pop out of a window and let loose with an Mg 42 and then throw down the weapon and start crying.Or the older idiots would do the same and then ask for a cigarette. More then a few of these men would say to me ‘’This one guy, he wasn't having any of that shit and he popped that Kraut son of bitch one’’. Now, I don't know if that meant some GI killed one of these bastards or smacked him in the head with a rifle butt. I know that kind of thing happened. And who could blame them. I often wondered if the way these men told me these things in a kind of third arty way when in reality they were speaking about themselves. But hey, who am I to judge? These men had seen their friends get killed by a ruthless enemy who thought they were going to conquer the world. It took Americans sometime to figure out that some 15 year old kid raised on Nazism and Aryan supremacy was perfectly wiling an able to use modern weapons of war to kill an adult male soldier. They had never encountered this kind of thing and many an unsuspecting American GI, raised differently paid for their observance of the rules of war and simple compassion with their lives. hell, if I were in their place I'd have shot some little Nazi bastard myself.
