CrimeStoppers Gun Buy Back program paid people $100 for assault weapons and $50 for pistols.Organizers of these events have become conflicted about how much they advertise them. If the event become well known, private parties show up to purchase the valuable guns, benefiting all concerned, but destroying the propaganda message of the event. I did not see any coverage of private purchasers at this event. That is likely why so many valuable guns were turned in for so little in recompense.
Weve had everything from AR-15s to 22 pistols, shotguns, some are guns that people want to get ride of because they had younger kids around the house, says Garrett.
67 guns were turned in during last years 2 hour gun buy back. Serial numbers of the guns they are buying back so see if the gun was used in a crime.
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -Almost all of these guns were turned in by people who know nothing about guns. They inherited them. They have been propagandized by the media. So they turn in $500 - $1,000 guns for $50. From montgomeryadvertiser.com:
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, anybody with unwanted firearms could sell them to CrimeStoppers for up to $100 cash per weapon.
Tony Garrett, executive director of CrimeStoppers said most of the guns were from "residents who were not gun users and feared that the gun created an unnecessary risk around their children and/or could be used illegally if the gun(s) were stolen out of their home."Second Amendment activists near Montgomery can mark their calendars for next year. That event will be held on June 29th, the last Saturday in June. At least one person in Alabama is paying attention. From al.com, in the comments:
Garrett said the next gun buyback event will be held June 29, 2019.
How much did they pay for each gun? Next time they do this I'll set up a stand next to theirs and offer five dollars more for each gun that I accept. Of course I reserve the right not to buy rusty junk--which is what usually is brought to these buybacks. If private parties had been there, it is hard to believe they wouldn't have paid a couple of hundred dollars for that AR clone, the Smith & Wesson model 60, the classic Colt pocket .32, or the pre-64 30-06.
When it comes to gun buybacks, both the theory and the data could not be clearer in showing that they dont work. The only guns that get turned in are ones that people put little value on anyway. There is no impact on crime. On the positive side, the cash for clunkers program is more attractive than the gun buyback program because, as long as they are being driven, old cars pollute, whereas old guns just sit there.Having private purchasers show up at these events is cheap activism for Second Amendment supporters. It shows that guns are valued assets for many people in the community.
A fair number were valuable collector items.
You would have to go weapon by weapon, and I don’t think the cops or authorities want to admit that 95-percent were weapons of a marginal quality or simply broke and not worth repair. As for collector items? Again, an examination would have to occur.
I could see some widow coming to some garage clean-up after the husband’s passing and not grasping the four rifles in some old gun-case were worth $1,000 each.
If you look around....no one ever does a real study of these ‘buyback’ events and that ought to make you ask questions.
A fool & their gun is soon parted..
Only he most useful of useful idiots do this thing.
Keep yer guns.
Our side knows.
I live just south of Montgomery and it looks like the turn in is less than my number of firearms and my collection would be considered small next to many of my fellow Alabamians. Certainly none of mine are as cheap as those. My guess is they were turned in to get enough for a fix or bottle of booze. So as usual it was just a feel good thing so I guess it worked by making the libs behind the turn in feel good because the think they did something good and most of the people who turned them in will feel better after they use the money to get their fix.
I imagine more then a few were stolen.
I’d gladly trade a ruger mk II for the Hi Standard
I have always wondered how you can buy back something that was never in your possession to start with. Apparently anti-gunners are used to dealing with stupid people.
Some things to consider:
Eleven teens die each day because of texting while driving. Maybe its time to raise the age of Smartphone ownership to 21.
If gun control laws actually worked, Chicago would be Mayberry.
The Second Amendment makes more women equal than the entire feminist movement.
Legal gun owners have 300 million guns and probably a trillion rounds of ammo. Seriously, folks, if we were the problem, youd know it.
When JFK was killed, nobody blamed the rifle.
The NRA murders 0 people and receives $0 in government funds. Planned Parenthood kills 350,000 babies every year and receives $500,000,000 in tax dollars annually.
I have no problem with vigorous background checks when it comes to firearms. While were at it, lets do the same when it comes to immigration and voter I.D.
Folks keep talking about another Civil War. One side knows how to shoot and has a trillion bullets. The other side has crying closets and is confused about which bathroom to use. How do you think thats going to end?
Some good Bumper Stickers!
“Gun Turn-in Montgomery Alabama: Trash and Treasures Turned In at “buyback”
Sad...there are dumshit politicians/police in the Old South. I thought they were mostly in coastal and northern cities.
That is just sad. Just spent a few days going thru all the guns in my safe, oiling and cleaning. Compared the values in my collection with going values on Gunbroker and see that my collection is now worth a few thousand more. Sorry that I don’t live close enough to Montgomery to make a buying expedition. Well that and the fact that the Liberty safe is full.
Makes me sad that this is going to be destroyed. And virtually in my backyard.
I as well.
I was able to determine it was a 30-06 because in a blow up of the picture, someone had put 30-06 on the stock, in marker.
I wonder if these idiots have any idea how few pre-64 model 70 rifles have ever been used in any sort of crime.
What is the deal on intercepting these guns? If the government was offering $50 why cannot I stand out there offering $60 and pick up the gems.
Different jurisdictions will have different rules, but what are the basic notions behind laws to thwart private sales?
It all depends on the state.
In most states private sales are legal.
The people organizing these events do not like private sales, because it destroys the narrative “guns bad, turn them in”.
Many, many people have gone and purchased guns at these events.
But there are a few states where every sale has to go through a dealer. Those include California, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
