Hiring 716: make $200,000 a year without a college degree

Larkin Express Logistics is the new business on the block in Buffalo’s Allentown neighborhood. “We find trucks for people that need to move stuff,” explained company co-founder Don De Laria.

The company opened earlier this year and it's already made $300,000 in revenue. Right now, the company has room to grow at the office space on Delaware Avenue. But, the goal is to expand beyond these walls in three years’ time. “We have designs to take this to a $125 million company in five to seven years.

But, first De Laria said it needs to build a strong, and motivated team. “We're hiring today. We're hiring for inside sales and experienced account managers.” Sales representatives are responsible for calling potential clients to learn their freight needs. Account managers handle day to day contact with contracted clients.

De Laria said both can be lucrative careers. The sales positions start at roughly $50,000 plus commission in your first year. “At year two at $100,000 and year three, you can make $150,000 to $250,000. Account managers cap at $100,000. But, you can still qualify for a bonus.” De Laria said you don't need a college degree. But, you do need to be motivated. “It takes the right person. There's a lot of people that say they can do it. But actually, doing it is another matter.”

The goal is to hire a handful of employees by the end of the year, and 100 in the next five years.

I’ve done it for many years, the problem is when you hit your stride and really start pushing for more, these benevolent employers change the pay plan. They don’t like it when you are making more than your boss.

You aren’t. Sales can be extremely lucrative.

Congratulations on your new business - But why in the Hell would you start a business in NY State? Gov. Andrew Monkey Face will be happy to take most of your revenue in state taxes!

Truck brokerage is extremely lucrative right now because there is such a shortage of available trucks right now in North America. We are paying the highest prices/mile we have ever paid to ship lumber, plywood and osb board. The shortage is the worst in the southeastern US.

Typically, truck brokers are paid straight commission. The more loads you book. The more you make.

I made a ton of money placing pay telephones (remember those?) for investors. Most days I made $900 but often I’d make $20,000 to $40,000 in a single day.

A sales outfit, with minor early success, touts greatly-hyped future sales expectations? Why, that NEVER happens... and if/when it does, they NEVER fail to hit their goals!!
