If youre into hunting smaller things and want to get a handgun for this, here are some things to consider.
Having the right handgun is a plus, dont get stuck with the wrong one, youll just be wasting your time.
So here are some tips that can help you make the right choice.
What's your Game?
So what are you hunting? If you're going for bigger animals its going to require bigger bullets, which has power.
For that bigger game, you shouldn't be dinking around with anything smaller than a .357 Magnum.
Revolver or semi-automatic?
Heres a quick pros and con: Revolvers are simple in operation, and semi-automatics allow higher capacity and quicker rapid shots.
If youre hunting big game, for the Glock lovers go with something in a G20 10mm or a lower-capacity .500 S&W Magnum revolver. (Revolvers has its play in this)
How much accuracy do you need?
If you didn't know having longer barrels means higher velocities and usually equates to better accuracy.
So the question is how much barrel do you want to carry around with you?
Scope or no Scope?
Not sure if youre going for the Han Solo blaster look, but pragmatically its not worth it.
Yes, some handguns have integral scope mounts you can attach a handgun scope to.
But just remember when you add a scope, you increase bulk and weight. Read the full story on Hunting Handguns here.
Know your terrain, know your critters, know your ballistics...then find what firearm you can comfortably carry and fire, accurately shoot, and your wife doesn’t know about.
A whitetail doe at 20 yards with my Colt Anaconda .44 mag with a six inch barrel. No, I wouldn't use a pissy scope if it was given to me.
3 deer in 3 years, with a 686 w/8 3/8 barrel and Black Talons.
Hehehe.... How true that is.
I had about the best week ever last week when it comes to firearms the wife approved of. Last Sunday a buddy of mine wanted to get 4 big pieces of rusty old steel tubing I had stored in the back 40 for a project he was doing. He told me he was short on cash so would I consider his new Bennelli 12 gauge in a trade for it? I let him twist my arm with a couple of boxes of shells along with it and I relented and said okay. (*snicker*) Walked in the house with it and my wife started giving me the stink eye because she hadn't seen that one before and was kind of tired of my excuses for needing another one. I explained how I got it and she was still not entirely trusting of the story, but let it go for use as ammo for her next spending spree.
Now for the best part, Monday, one day later, I was working here at my business and a guy who recently retired from the SEALS, in fact he was the Master Chief in charge of the sniper school there, called and asked if I would stick around until he got there in a few minutes. He walked into my business and handed me a custom made sniper rifle he hand built from an upper and lower that I programmed and did the design work for for his business (www.centurionarms.com - I'll plug it here) as a thank you for all the work I did helping him get his machines up and running. You have no idea what that meant to me, if you ever have seen the cover of Chris Kyle's book American Sniper it was Monty who built that rifle he's holding for him. I came home that night and showed my wife this incredible new rifle and told her it was a free gift, it actually took a phone call from Monty to get her to believe it.
So yeah, I had a pretty good week last week when it comes to gun deals the wife approved of. :)
Why hunt with a pistol when there are plenty of rifles to chose from?
Because one wants the only reason needed.
I have what one could consider Hunting handguns the biggest is a 460S@W in a BFR with a 10 in barrel.
But I have always said if one is real serious about killing things take a rifle.
44 mag with Barnes ammo, but used in a rifle is deadly on deer. Rifles shoots 44 ammo about 400-600 fps faster than hg’s. Absolutely deadly on deer.
The 460 Magnum S&W revolver is more practical than the 500. About the same killing power, slightly faster flatter shooting, but the biggest reason lies in versatility. 500 & 460 magnum shells are expensive and not always necessary. The 500 only shoots that one shell while the 460 gives you the options of 454 Casull and 45 Colt with less cost and less recoil.
That 500 is like carrying a concrete block.
I suppose if one wanted to hunt with a spear it is certainly their choice. There are better ways to get the job done.

Yeh, such as a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 12 guage Home defense shotgun as it has a short barrel. I would load it with slugs.
I have taken feral hogs with a knife.
Gave up doing it when I turned 40 -- it is a young man's activity. But, it can be very exciting.
Now that is hunting!
+ Don’t get a POS plastic tactical holster.
I want a Haunting Handgun.
