BR-TN hiring expo set for Thursday (1,500 jobs in Tennessee)

BRISTOL, Tenn. — A Hiring Expo is being held Thursday to fill more than 1,500 jobs currently available in the Bristol area by the Bristol Tennessee Industrial Development Board in conjunction with NETWORKS Sullivan Partnership.

Bristol Tennessee Economic Development Director Tom Anderson said the expo will be the fourth hosted by the city. Previous events were held in May and October 2016 and September 2017.

“Every year, we’ve had employers from different sectors seeking to fill positions,” Anderson said. “And this year is no different — there are current job openings in manufacturing, health care, education, customer service and many more.”

The event will be held at Bristol Motor Speedway, where about 40 employers will be set to hire employees of all ages and nearly any level of education and experience. There is no cost for applicants.

Holding the expo at the speedway makes it easy for businesses to find the workforce they need, Anderson said.

“We want to bridge the gap between employers and the qualified workforce in our region,” he said. “We continually encounter the narrative that there aren’t enough jobs available in our community, but the employment demands from our existing industry as well as from new businesses which have chosen to locate here prove that that’s simply not the case.”

Anderson added that they don’t know exactly how many people have been hired during the previous expos, but the response from employers and applicants have been positive.

“Getting the exact number of people that are hired at the events is hard to chase down because each employer’s hiring processes vary in length and complexity,” he said. “But most of the employers are repeat attendees and they have told us they expect to fill the majority of their positions.”

The expo will also feature a Workforce Development Center, where agencies and organizations will provide applicants information about education opportunities, résumé building, job training, veterans programs and career services.

The city will provide a free shuttle to and from the event for job-seekers who need transportation. The pick-up and drop-off point will be the Downtown Center on Shelby Street, across from City Hall.
