A South Korean official placed the odds of President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un holding their historic summit as planned at "99.9 percent," despite recent threats by the Pyongyang to withdraw from the gathering.
Chung Eui-yong, national security adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, forecast that U.S. and North Korean officials would hold talks in Singapore on June 12 as scheduled, even as tensions have risen over Pyongyang's objections to military exercises executed by the U.S. and South Korea.
"We believe there is a 99.9 percent chance the North Korea-U.S. summit will be held as scheduled," the official told reporters while en route to Washington for a meeting Tuesday between Trump and Moon, according to the Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency.
But Chung added that officials are "preparing for many different possibilities" and making efforts "to understand the situation from the North's perspective."(continued)
