Disenfranchising someone and preventing someone from defending themselves are both pretty severe.

In light of the myriad offenses deemed "felonies", it sure is.

All felons if they are not legally incarcerated, have 2Amd rights just as every other citizen not legally incarcerated has 2Amd rights. I think that probably legally incarcerated people do not have 2Amd rights from the 13th amendment involuntary servitude exception to universal rights as applied to prisoners.

As a member of a prosecutor’s office for many years, it saddens me that people aren’t permitted to pay their debt to society and have ALL their rights restored upon release. This idea of perpetual punishment is just wrong, as far as I’m concerned. If they break the law again, jail them again. But if they’re out of jail, they should have ALL rights restored.

Agreed. This whole concept of having your rights removed is an anathema in a free nation where rights are endowed by their creator. Subjects of the crown can have any rights unbjustly subjugated by the state, but you shouldn't be able to do this to free men.

How about we stop with this two tiered system we have and when you have served your sentence your rights as a US citizen are restored including your right to bear arms.

The bad guys get weapons as soon as they get out any way which means that only the actually reformed are left totally defenseless.
