You have it reversed. The brownshirts were the SA, which were lead by a lot of homosexuals like Ernst Rohm. The blackshirts were the SS, which began as part of the SA, and led by Himmler. The Gestapo and the SS moved against the SA on the night you referred to.

There was talk of unifying the SS, SA and Gestapo under one commander. In front of Himmler and Hitler, Ernst Roehm suggested that it ought to be him. That was not long before the Night of the Long Knives. Perhaps having been Hitler’s superior in the Freikorps made him a bit too bold.
