The Mini 14 got a bad reputation here as the firearm that Ghamil Garbi (aka Marc Lepine) used to commit his rampage at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989.

What anti gunners won’t tell you is that Gharbi stabbed one or two of his victims to death after the gun apparently jammed and that the Montreal city coroner determined that poor police response time was the major factor as to why Gharbi achieved the death toll that he did. Police did not enter the computer science building until some ten minutes after Gharbi had taken his own life and thirty minutes after he began shooting (the Montreal 911 centre did not give accurate address information to police). Gharbi would likely have killed many even with a single shot rifle or shotgun.

Agreed. Canada has absolutely draconian gun laws, depending on how the provinces administer them. New Brunswick is horribly draconian.
