According to Wikipedia, the Judge is officially classified revolvashotshellshooter, unless you plug in 45 long Colt - then it’s a makemydayevolver. It goes on to say something about a punk not feeling very lucky.

Not legally.

The agency classifies it as a “handgun.” Same with S&W’s Governor. Both have rifled barrels.

Smoothbore handguns are “controlled” items under the NFA and must be registered to allow legal possession. Just what “threat” they posed to the public, to get them onto the controlled-items list, is not clear. Relying on overheated activists to write gun legislation was not a good idea in the 1930s, and it’s no better today.

The Judge is a .45 cal Long Colt revolver...
.410 shells just happen to fit into it.
