Nobody proofreads anymore (An e-mail from Apple)

Read the solicitation below.

"Find a Apple Store workshop,"

"A Apple Store"??

Over 60 years ago, Ralph Kramden and Art Carney had them rolling in the aisles when their TV ad asked,

"Can it core a apple?"

This was no rushed off blog typed on a 4" touch screen. This is a formal short-form advertisement by a half-trillion dollar company.

Sheesh!

Your assumption is flawed, it is not that they didn’t proof read the document in question. They did, most likely 3-4 of them checked it over. But 75% of the people in this country under 50, can NOT Spell their own street properly.

Pathetic.

I’m a retired business editor with 26 years newspaper experience.

I’d like to get back into the writing and editing game in a small way, both for a little extra money and because I think there’s a need for tight, accurate copy.

Based on the great silence that has greeted all my efforts to partake of the Trump economy, it seems that nobody cares about clear writing anymore.

Pathetic indeed — spending a lifetime developing a skill only to find there’s no longer a market for it.

We have become a post-literate society and no one seems to care, except a few holdouts like myself.

“The Chef of the Future”

Obscure reference for those under 60, but STILL 10 of the funniest minutes ever on TV.

I am certainly no expert. I think “Find a Apple store” may be correct. You wouldn’t say “Find an store”. My grammar rules could be flawed here.

I’m thinking that the original copy said “Find a workshop...” and someone inserted the “Apple Store” part without rereading the sentence.

They must be using the FileMaker free edition instead of the Filemaker Pro edition.

No, you would not say, “Find an store” because “store” does not begin with a vowel sound. However, “Apple” begins with a vowel sound, so “an” instead of “a” is to be used.

Similarly, you would say, “I saw a large owl”, and you would say, “I saw an owl”. Again, the form of the indefinite article is determined merely by the initial sound of the word that it precedes.

I hope this makes it clear for you.

I increasingly see “less” when “fewer” would be appropriate. A pet peeve.

Nobody proofreads anymore (An e-mail from Apple)

Certainly not on Free Republic.

I've occasionally thought of keeping track of the 25 or 50 most often misspelled words on Free Republic, but there wouldn't be time to do anything else.

Everyone knows the difference between a typo and a hypo, and make allowances, but the other kind of carelessness is irritating.
If I can't guess the intended idea, in the first few seconds, I just move on to the next post. Whether it's a book, a magazine article or a forum post the reading pace hits a brick wall and I lose interest; if the poster doesn't care, why should I?

I agree 100% with your post. Maybe it could be turned into a fundraising event for FR. Each misspelled word or grammar error will cost the poster $5.00.

No more funding problems!
