I don’t know about that.
True progressives - and there are 10’s of millions of them - believe in the police state...just as long as it is their police state punishing things their opposition believes in, not the things they believe in.
True progressives don’t believe in a Republic anyway. They believe in dictatorship, where those that don’t think as they do, who aren’t a part of the favored group, will be punished severely daily. True progressives are the children of Hitler, Goebbels, Stalin, Mao and they love their SS.
I don’t think the true progressives will be shocked at all. They will be mad. Take to the streets mad. Then they will simply await their next opportunity.
Looking through the Bell Curve at the planet progressive, I see an unknown percentage who fit your description and who certainly will act as you have predicted.
However, optimist that I am, I believe the truth will simply be too persuasive for the moderate middle, who often tend to be followers more than believers.
If the coming truth is as bad as I’ve heard, or worse as I tend to believe, then their disgust will overwhelm whatever resistance their initial anger may put up.
At that point, I suspect their anger will switch sides and will then be directed at those who have played them and used them and their support for evil.
