That’s a possibility. Leftist media in Russia was angry at Gennady Zyuganov - a long time Communist leader for failure to attract younger supporters.
They welcomed Grudinin nomination at first but with relevations like that and weak debates rumors now he is a Manchurian candidate inserted to finally bury the Communist Party.

The speed with which this charge arose after Grudinin’s candidacy was announced makes it pretty clear they had the goods on him in advance, no? If so, why hadn’t he already been charged?
Since Grudinin was going to lose massively, an introductory level egoist would want to make it seem that he had won a real contest while secretly cheating (Hillary Clinton comes to mind). Putin is advertising that he is above all that pretending stuff.
Charged with what? Hiding accounts from IRS (or a Russian equivalent) is a minor infraction in Russia unless connected with a massive tax fraud. The announcement is basically about undermining this guy’s credibility.

Of course it is, but by no means all. If you are an insider “hiding accounts” is probably standard practice and gets ignored. Putin holding “minor infractions” over your head is not a small thing.
And Putin would have been in the Ochrana under the Tsar. It’s not about ideology with Putin.

The guy is not from Putin’s party but a Communist and the account stuff is dug out by Liberal Democrats. From a first look of it it is leftist turf war.
