Face it, the British military was never that great on land. They were a naval power.
For its size (small by European standards) the British army was the best on earth. Very few could stand up to the firepower they were able to maintain with their Brown Bess muskets and discipline. It is one of the things that make our victories at Saratoga, Yorktown, and New Orleans so remarkable.
