Are you out west? Western coyotes are 20 to 35 lbs; Eastern Coyotes are actually wolf-coyote hybrids and run 40 to 60 lbs (here in PA). Having spent time around both variants, western coyotes are harmless, but the eastern variety are much sneakier and aggressive (I have only seen them visually when stalking with dogs and night vision, but they will attack pets and livestock with little fear even right at house at night— hit fast and run off). I could definitely see them attacking humans.
California, Idaho, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Seen em all and can also tell you wolves attacking humans is extremely rare. They are a danger to livestock and pets no question and should be shot on sight but as far as a threat to humans I’d worry about a opposum more. They have a natural fear of humans and that’s why you only have seen them at night. There are far more deer attacks than coyotes when discussing humans.
I think the ones in our front yard last night must have been of the eastern variety as I was surprised at how large they were.
