If you didnt know hogs are all over the state of Texas.
Over the last couple years, Ray Shinpaugh has been perfecting the art of feral hog eradication using a side-by-side, thermal monocular, shotgun, and laser to eliminate hogs with incredible efficiency.
One strategy that he uses under the cover of darkness is that him and his hunting partner use thermal optics to locate groups of feral hogs.
With the lights off, they position themselves between the pigs and any nearby cover. Once in position, they flip on the lights and drive the pigs further out in the open where they can close in on the hogs and open fire with 00 buck shot.
Each year feral hogs cause millions of dollars in damage in the form of damaged crops, contaminated water supplies, broken equipment, transmission of disease and injury to livestock. See the full footage of night hog hunt video here.
I thought because of the high iron in their blood, it takes more to kill them then some buckshot because of the quick coagulation of the blood.
He should visit CONGRESS
now I will tell you men....here in the great state of Missouri we are no longer able to hunt the feral pig on public land. We must call in our sighting and let the real pro’s trap them pigs. We are told we have one of the best fish and game dept’s in the country...I guess that is why we at the “ show me state “... crazy...so crazy....bastards...hunters did not complain at all...no one did
I guess in Southern Wisconsin you can get in trouble for NOT shooting them.
And the coon dogs are now all re-trained for hogs. Bear dogs are already trained since bears are nothing but hogs.
I dunno, every pellet in a round of 00 buckshot is 30 caliber so I would think it would do the trick from the appropriate range.
Fun, and as a bonus, it freaks out the Progressives. So, God bless the hog hunters!
Are these hogs good eating if you cook the meat to very well done?
Would a very large caliber rifle like a 416 Weatherby magnum be a good choice for a backup to the shotgun?
They can be a little gamey so field dressing really matters like all wild game. On the tough side but there are time-tested methods of working around that. Low and slow to deal with meat on the tough side. It can make decent barbecue, I don’t know about anything else, no exposure.

Actually Id go with a semi-auto in .308. Plenty of power and quick shots on other Hogs in the Sounder.
An FN or AR-10 would be a good choice I think.

Wild hogs are excellent fare.
Here's some info on Trichinosis: https://honest-food.net/on-trichinosis-in-wild-game/
a 416 would be grossly overkill. .223s are commonly used.
I don't know from personal experience. I've been told the females are good eating if harvested at the right time of season. I've also heard of people hunting them with everything from handguns to 22s to pretty high caliber rifles. If I was going to carry anything as a back up it would probably be a side arm in case one or more hogs charged me and got inside.
The semi-auto idea is good. Heavy hollow points?
Thanks for all the advice. I understand that they’re bad news if they get ahold of you. I like all bar-b-q and meats except for liver.
You must not of had a good dish of liver and onions yet. A lot of cooks overcook the liver.
Heavy hollow points?
Id recommend soft points for better penetration.
About 160 grains would do it.

My daughter (who lives about 16 miles from Houston) shot a hog from her 2nd story porch in the late spring this year. It dressed out to about 180 pounds and it was good eating. She used a 20-gage (pink) Mossberg shotgun with buckshot.
I’m a mountain biker here in Northern California and I see groups of 20 to 30 have them usually dark black or maroon colored and I usually scare the shit out of them they’re mostly in the far east bay where I find him
Now you can kill em here in ca
Not so much with the stupid turkeys who strut about everywhere
