wasting 5-7 years getting a worthless degree in the so called liberal arts
I have an MA in English Literature, which is of course considered a liberal arts major.
I took out a whopping $1800 in student loans for both the undergrad and grad degrees (of course this was 1980). The rest was paid through grants, scholarships, and working part-time, including as a graduate teaching assistant.
Did I flounder for a while with my "useless" degree? A little. But eventually found myself gainfully employed, if not spectacularly so, and haven't had a student loan payment for 30 years.
In general, I think that student loan maximums should vary by major. For example, a Theater Arts major should only be allowed to borrow so much vs. someone studying for a STEM degree.

Correction: I meant to say “this was in the 1980s” not this was 1980.
I’m not THAT old. ;-)
