If you are in the city finding single people near your own age to date is usually not a problem. But, at that time, there were few jobs in a small town that would support a single female. So most girls either left for the city, collage or got married. In all fairness so did most of the boys unless they were going into business with dad. The boys that stayed married their high school sweethearts or married the girl they met at college. Roy Moore went to West Point and marrying a class mate was rather out of the question.
When you have a small dating pool you can either go younger or older.
In one small town where I lived there were exactly three guys that were single, of my religion and not old enough to be my grandfather or too young to vote. Since I was only going to be there for a while I solved my problem by not dating at all for those two years.
If I was going to be living there it could have been a problem.
Pedophilia means prepubescent children. Ebephilia or some word similar to that means adolescents. Of course there is no evidence that he was either one.

At that time I was “getting it on” on a daily basis with the 14 YO girl that lived across the street (who I later married) and her parents were well aware of it but pretended that they weren't.

I frankly don't see it as being in any way appropriate for a grown man in his 20's - 30's to be "dating" a 14-16 year old child whether or not he has the parents "permission."
It's fundamentally wrong, I just don't care how you try justifying it.
I’m just floored that no one remembers when high school girls just wanted to get married and be wives and mothers.
And men wanted to be husbands and fathers and not have competitive career women as wives.

40 years ago it was quite a bit different for a West Pointer who immediately went to the Viet era Army and then served 6 years including a tour in Vietnam. He would have been pushing 30 when he got his discharge and entered law school.
I expect we’d discover the same for many who served in a wartime era while they were young.
