Great man and article.
Wow! What a man!
My uncle, who was like a father to me, told me stories about his time in the CCC.
The story that I have always read is that was a von Brauns brother was the one approached American soldiers, and later took them to where Wernher and others were hiding.
Great story today from todays young preacher who was one of the speakers at our Veterans Day ceremony.
His grandfather had gotten permission from his parents to enlist at 17-1/2 to get in on the tail end of WWII.
He had just gotten to the Phillipines after the U.S. invasion when the now-returned MacArthur drove up in a Jeep and got out to talk to people, having stopped right next to the grandfather. The driver told the grandfather Stay here, watch this Jeep, Ill be right back, Ive got to find a latrine.
The driver no more than left, than MacArthur returned and demanded Wheres my driver?
Hes gone to relieve himself, sir!
Youre my new driver, get in. < pointing at grandfather with corn cob pipe>
And thats how this young preachers grandfather became MacArthurs driver for his time in the Phillipines!
I thought that a fun story!
