Right off I77 and Forest Drive is an entrance to Fort Jackson.
More often than not, there is one to three panhandlers in the afternoon.
Last week, the spouse was leaving choir practice and one with a sob story hit her up. She declined and left. I say she did the right thing since word would probably get out that’s a new area to infest.
I know about helping the poor and downtrodden. I’ve been there, mostly my own fault. With that being said, I NEVER once considered being a beggar. It is unthinkable.
I’ll give to reputable local charities though.
Had to right this.

Maybe you could have left this next time.......
Haha. I was gonna say.
Take their pictures, or better yet record them. Then post it. Maybe Michelle Obama will start a hashtag campaign...
Do they order ‘cheese pizzas’? That could be one answer.

ahh...the benefits of living in Flyover Country!
The one time I gave a few bucks was to a dude holding a sign that said, Um not gonna lie....I just need a beer.”
I appreciated his honesty. He appreciated the cash!
Isn’t that the truth.
There was heavy construction traffic on the major highway and he drove up to me and asked me for some money claiming his wife forgot to fill up the car and he was almost out of gas and had left his wallet at home.
I told him he was a dumb ass for leaving his wallet at home. Didn't faze him, he just drove around to another car at a pump and asked for money.........
Some years ago my sister was stopped one morning at a light at the off-ramp exit. She called me to describe what she was watching while waiting for the light. Two cars ahead of her was a white panel van. The sliding door flew open, new corner bums jump out, signs in hand, old corner bums jump in, door slams, light changed, van takes off, new bums hit the street.
Later that day she is returning home, sitting at the opposite corner light to the ON-ramp, calls me again while waiting for the light to change. There's that same van, but this time directly in front of her. The door flies open, the corner bums get in, door slams, light changed - and there it was in the blink of an eye: another well-rehearsed Changing of the Bums.
A couple years later, it was me calling her - telling of the late-model Mercedes luxury sedan at the SAME on-ramp light: new bum chick jumps out, opens back door, grabs her sign, old bum chick jumps in, grabs the wheel, light changed, car speeds off, new bum chick hits the street.
A retired cop friend told me he once arrested a beggar back when it was illegal to beg at the corners, and the bum asked if she could stop by the bank on the way to jail - seems she had $1000 cash she needed to deposit first.
A co-irker several years ago gave a panhandler a few bucks.
Later on the interstate, the same guy passed him in a nice BMW.
That was a great post. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.
I hope someday I will witness a Changing of the Bums!
we have them in mtns now
These professional street beggars are not exactly a new scam, but they are a scam. The truly needy are not begging in traffic.
Came to a light in downtown San Antonio and a pan handler came up to the car. I handed him a bunch of change. It was more than 2 bucks. He looked at it and said, “change?” I told him if he didn’t want it he could give it back. He walked off.
“co-irker “
A pardner in irk. I love it.
