Hillary Clinton proved how relevant she is to young women today with her London talk

Yesterday evening Hillary Clinton appeared in front of an audience of thousands to be interviewed live by BBC special correspondent James Naughtie. She was promoting her book What Happened in which she dissects the 2016 election campaign from a range of angles in order to identify how the most qualified, experienced and seemingly popular candidate ended up losing to Donald Trump.

While in the past year American politics has been at the forefront of many people’s minds, it’s hard to imagine another former US secretary of state selling out an auditorium within hours of the tickets going on sale. It was apparent from the audience’s reaction to her introduction to the stage – whooping, cheering, seemingly endless applause and smartphones openly snapping despite the clear signs that filming and photography are forbidden – that the passion for Clinton far exceeds what we usually see even for domestic politicians, let alone foreign ones. Looking around at the audience, it was comprised by people of different genders, ethnicities and ages. It seems the cult of Hillary is wide-reaching. And it’s not hard to see why. She responded to each question with thoughtfulness, aplomb and just the right level of humour – even the ones which must have been tough. When Naughtie asks her how her defeat to Trump makes her feel, whether she’d wished it was someone else who had run, the implication being that Bernie Sanders may have been better placed to take on an anti-establishment candidate, she responds: ‘Absolutely not. I just wish I’d won.’

In among witty jibes at Trump (‘I don’t think he understood me a lot of the time’), Putin (‘he obviously likes the whole bare chest thing’) and Jim Comey (‘oh, the emails’), she spoke in-depth about some key political issues affecting the US, including voter suppression, healthcare legislation and Russian meddling, which she called ‘a cyber cold war’. It wasn’t fluffy or light, and there was little mention of her personal life, yet the audience was enthralled. After the event I watched the waves of audience members trickle out, and was thrilled to see how many young women were animatedly discussing the issues raised. ‘Just being a woman in politics is so amazing, but he’s achieved so much in her lifetime. She’s such an ally to all women. Such an inspiration,’ said Molly, who is 17. Her ability to speak to young women of different generations and inspire hope for the future speaks volumes of Clinton’s relevance in today’s world, and the lasting legacy she’s creating, maybe even permeating generations of the future. Sureyya is 33 and heavily pregnant. She said: ‘I thought it would be so empowering and exciting to see Hillary in person. Regardless of what your view is of her, she’s a fabulous speaker and has so much to say.’ She admits a part of her was hoping her water would break at the event – what could be a better omen for the birth of the little girl she’s expecting?

Hannah is a 26-year-old student based in London. She said: ‘I really admire Hillary Clinton. Not all politicians are perfect but I think she tries pretty hard. It’s not all about personality with her, the politics are important but she’s clearly so resilient. I think she’s a great female role model.’ This concept of resilience is one that came up again and again when talking to people who attended the event. It seems that even for those who are too young to remember the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the ensuing years of public humiliation Clinton endured, even those who can barely remember the 2008 Democratic primaries which she lost to Barack Obama, who no one thought would ever become president, the innate strength Clinton has demonstrated over the years is apparent. There are so few women in the highest political positions – is it any wonder that so many of us flock to Hillary? It’s a testament to her tenacity and determination to come back from every setback that so many people look up to her. Last night proved that she is far from irrelevant, and if there’s one thing the election of Donald Trump proved, it’s that we need more strong women entering politics now than ever before. Hopefully last night Hillary Clinton inspired enough young women to make a start.

Well, Sirena Bergman, it's no secret why clueless suckers like you fall for Hillary's lies and ugly agenda every time, but you haven't explained why any intelligent woman should allow herself to be deceived by her...

qualified - What has Hillary EVER accomplished?

experienced - A disaster as a senator and secretary of state. What has she EVER accomplished?

seemingly popular candidate - she lost in a landslide (electoral speaking). She lost states and counties that have voted democrat for generations...

What’s with the British and Australian (Sarah Ferguson - is this Fergie?) women writers? They all sound like Hillary Clinton wannabe lovers or something in that gender.

The only thing Hillary has been successful at, if her story today is to be believed, it that she tripped on high heels while running down the stairs with a coffee in one hand and a cell phone? in the other, did a back-flip up the stairs, and broke her toe (not her back, neck, arm, leg, hip or head).

Next thing we know the liberal media will be promoting Hillary as the next Kerry Strug of the 2018 or 2020 Women’s Olympic gymnastics team.

The British media should go into the fertilizer business. They’d make a fortune with all the bullshit that they sell the idiotic public every day.

British young women already have available to them a great, strong and SUCCESSFUL role model; a role model for whom Mrs. Clinton would not be a pimple on her backside: Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

I watched a piece after the Iowa primary and six to eight Iowa Democrats were in front of a moderator. All were pro-Hillary. So the moderator started out...with the eight years as Senator and four as Secretary of State....what do you see for accomplishments? Man, there was this thirty-second pause and you could tell that they were lacking. None of the group could cite a single accomplishment other than making speeches. You could bring up Bernie, and he had various bills that he’d drafted and written up...but Hillary only had four total bills in eight years that she drafted and got passed. The group couldn’t even cite that.

Hillary is so smart she can tell us all about how she lost.

Luckily she wasn’t smart enough to figure out how to win.
