ZAF Energy Systems Inc. opened a new production facility in Joplin Thursday, which is expected to create more than 100 jobs.
The Montana-based company, which develops next-generation battery technology, is expanding its production capacity to meet customer demand and drive more interest in its rechargeable nickel zinc battery (NiZn) as a replacement for lead-acid batteries. The additional capacity also will help it expedite licensing and joint venture negotiations, as well as commercializing its products on a global scale.
“We just weren’t able to keep up with the demand with the capacity we had in Montana,” said ZAF CEO Randy Moore said in a release. “The new production facility in Joplin will drastically scale up production to several thousand batteries per month, enabling us to keep pace with growing demand while also refining manufacturing processes and accelerating development efforts. The end result will be a turnkey engineering package we can deliver to manufacturers with customer demand already built into the equation.”
ZAF's batteries can be used in a variety of industries, including automotive, renewable energy, remote telecom and heavy trucking. According to a release, the NiZn batteries are poised to disrupt the industry, since they can offer twice the storage capacity and three times the power of legacy lead-acid batteries.
ZAF was founded in 2011 and has locations in northwestern Montana and southwest Missouri.

The battery was later developed by the Irish chemist Dr. James J. Drumm (1897–1974),[2] and installed in four two-car Drumm railcar sets between 1932 and 1948 for use on the Dublin–Bray railway line.
