Catalonia and Its Referendum on Independence from Spain
Canada Free Press ^ | 10/03/17 | Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh

Voting in a referendum that has been declared illegal by the central government in Madrid and by the courts was also a bad idea

Catalonia is located on the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula and has a population of 7.52 million people. Catalonia has a distinct history, culture, and language. Its main city, Barcelona, was captured in 1714 by the first Bourbon king of Spain, Felipe V, and Catalonia lost its autonomy. Catalonia’s National Day, September 11, commemorates this event.

The regional Government of Catalonia decided that a referendum would take place on Catalan independence on October 1, 2017. But the Constitutional Court of Spain declared on September 6, 2017 that the referendum and its invocation violated the Constitution.

I read up on Catalonia the other day. 1) For the last 30 years (!) they have invited Muslims to emigrate to their area in an open-arms (sentimentalist) sort of way. They wanted immigrants who would be willing to learn Catalan rather than Spanish, and figured this was the way to get them.

It did not happen, of course. They have hoards of Muslim immigrants who have not assimilated, who have not learned the language, and who are ‘bad house guests.’

When Madrid warned them of this recent ISIS truck attack at the very open-air market where it did happen, they refused to acknowledge the danger because ‘Madrid just can’t tell US what to do.” So, they were warned but they ignored it. That is just plain stupid.

They have absolutely no infrastructure set up to govern themselves. None. No government, no buildings, no laws - no nothing.

That, to me, makes them hot-heads. The vote would have been irrelevant and not implemented because it was all noise.

WHY did they bash heads? That I have not researched yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that it was in part Victims making sure they got to be Victims on the world stage.

just my take on it.

“They have absolutely no infrastructure set up to govern themselves. None. No government, no buildings, no laws - no nothing.”

Given what is provided in the link below, the above statement is very ignorant.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalitat_de_Catalunya

In addition to the autonomous actions of the regional government provided in the link above, is a regional region-wide tax agency that when into operation in May of this year, ahead of the latest “independence vote”.

Full disclosure: I have not given this information to take either a pro or con position on independence for Catalonia.

Letting them go would be good for Spain.

The information I posted was from a conversation with a local person after the ISIS truck guy ran into pedestrians. That Catalonia had been warned and had blown Madrid off. Your argument is with them.

I wonder if within FR we could have a semblance of discussion vs calling names. “Very ignorant’ - you could perhaps say, ‘Well according to Wikipedia” or something. Which I am not sure I believe is THE source of all good info. Just saying.

“Ignorant” is always taken as a pejorative, and as if “name calling” but all it really means is “uninformed”. All of us are ignorant of a vast amount of things. There is not shame in it, as we cannot be super informed of everything. I can at any time admit in conversation that I am ignorant of something, and I’ll even use that word exactly.

When we say something without the facts behind it, we might say something that the facts will wind up backing up, and we might not. Making mistakes is nothing to be ashamed of. We all do it.

I have not found anything via independent research that contradicts the Wiki material.

What led me to it was a Spanish friend who sad he did not understand everything about the Catalan independence movement because from a Spanish national point of view they already have a considerable about of autonomy. I knew there was more to his statement that a mere opinion so I looked it up.

Are you saying a Spanish person, a Catalonia person, or a U.S. person said:

“They have absolutely no infrastructure set up to govern themselves. None. No government, no buildings, no laws - no nothing.”

It makes no difference really. Just like Americans can be ignorant (mis-informed/uninformed) about SO MANY things in this country, so can a Spanish national from the Catalonia region or elsewhere in Spain be ignorant (misinformed/uniformed) about matters in Spain. The source does not really matter and my argument is not personal, with you or with them - it’s with the statement.

Notice, unlike your claim, I did not call you or anyone ignorant. I said the statement was ignorant.

Not alike many a statement I have made before when my memory or source(s) were just as bad.
