We should have seen Trump coming (2008 Obama nostalgia)
The Manchester Guardian ^ | September 29, 2017 | Ta-Nehisi Coates

I have often wondered how I missed the coming tragedy. It is not so much that I should have predicted that Americans would elect Donald Trump. It’s just that I shouldn’t have put it past us. It was tough to keep track of the currents of politics and pageantry swirling at once. All my life I had seen myself, and my people, backed into a corner. Had I been wrong? Watching the crowds at county fairs cheer for Michelle Obama in 2008, or flipping through the enchanting photo spreads of the glamorous incoming administration, it was easy to believe that I had been.

And it was more than symbolic. Barack Obama’s victory meant not just a black president but also that Democrats, the party supported by most black people, enjoyed majorities in Congress. Prominent intellectuals were predicting that modern conservatism – a movement steeped in white resentment – was at its end and that a demographic wave of Asians, Latinos and blacks would sink the Republican party.

Back in the summer of 2008, as Obama closed out the primary and closed in on history, vendors in Harlem hawked T-shirts emblazoned with his face and posters placing him in the black Valhalla where Martin, Malcolm and Harriet were throned. It is hard to remember the excitement of that time, because I now know that the sense we had that summer, the sense that we were approaching an end-of-history moment, proved to be wrong.

It is not so much that I logically reasoned out that Obama’s election would author a post-racist age. But it now seemed possible that white supremacy, the scourge of American history, might well be banished in my lifetime. In those days I imagined racism as a tumour that could be isolated and removed from the body of America....

Yup.

Keep up the good work. I like to know what the enemies of America are saying.

“Now we’re catching it from a radical leftist rag in Britain.”

The source is listed as “The Manchester Guardian” even though the paper changed its name to “The Guardian” in 1959.

“People such as Ta-Nehisi Coates make resurrecting the concept of Liberia appealing.”

Perhaps a rumor that Trump will repeal the 13th Amendment will get them to leave.

“The dummies CREATED Trump.”

They didn’t create him, they made him the only viable choice between a RAT party that became openly hateful of America and white people. Which openly embraced all forms of perversion, cultural/demographic suicide, as well as all enemies both foreign and domestic. And a Repub party too clueless and cowardly to oppose them. The choice was Trump, or the end of America.

In those days I imagined racism as a tumour that could be isolated and removed from the body of America, not as a pervasive system both native and essential to that body.

Too much introspection is obviously not one of the authors failings.

This guy reads like his whole purpose in this life is seeking retribution against whites... He has NO clue what conservatism means ... ‘individual personal responsibility’... regardless of ethnicity... some literally are not mentally prepared to take on that responsibility.

Exodus 16:1-3

1 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

Nothing new under the sun.

“Had I been wrong?”

Yes - and now you’re wrong again. Trump didn’t win due to a ‘white-lash’ reaction to Obama’s blackness.

Trump won because Obama was a pathetic president, whose ineffectiveness and divisiveness proved once and for all the foolishness of identity politics.

Electing Obama just because he was black was clearly a mistake - one the voters were not willing to repeat by electing Hillary Clinton president just because she’s female.

obama?....0bama who?

Oh...Teah! The prince of fools....

So seldom hear of it anymore....like it’s NOT unfinished business anymore....something gone away...the smell anyway...
the threat, the danger....everyone/everything has its own level of pc...oh, i fergot! No more pc!

The prince of fools, though no longer @ the top of our list has not gone away; quite the contrary!

Only writers like Cliff Kincaid, Col Sellin, McLeod, Zieve, Swirsky, Williams...and too few more still write on this unfinished biz!
Like I say—all stay within the wall of pc...call it denial, projection, whatever.

Never mind, he hasn’t just walked away scot-free...he’s still there!

Semper TRUMP.45...If we can keep him!

A Voice In The Wiklderness...

But what I sensed was a country trying to skip out on a bill, trying to stave off a terrible accounting.

This was the last line of the article. War born of hate and resentment is always the lingering conclusion of Black racists.

Tribalists do revenge; not forgiveness. They want separation from enemy tribes; not unity. They want domination; not equality. They want war - simmering or hot - depending on their military power which depends on their numbers. They work within sharp edges. Liberals make sure resentment and hate keep blacks in a tribal mentality and identity, separate from whites on the Democrat plantation.

Our country is Christian and our Christian culture expects forgiveness and redemption. That is why our history does not pick at old wounds and entertain the belligerent seeking revenge. Just getting Europeans to overcome the tribal history of conflict and self righteous anger and, instead, enter into a united American identity was a miracle. But that will never happen with some blacks.

I’ve suspected the Bushes and the Clintons have been in bed together since the drug running out of Mena in the ‘80s. They’ve either been colluding with one another or blackmailing each other, or some peculiar combination of both. Of course, the establishment of both parties would never allow for a thorough investigation of “the families”, as the fallout would be epic.

I think you showed me that horsehead one. It would’ve been funnier if they could do a play on the scene in the Godfather.

Boogersandcumb. That was definitely South Park comedy gold.

Democrats have been crushed in every election since 2010. Yes Barry got re-elected but other than that they had nothing to suggest they were not facing defeat and decline....

The writing was on the wall long before “Obama”. He was counter the trend not an indicator of it.
