In Post-Industrial America, if you work full time, you work way past full time. If you are the other half of the population and don’t work full time, you have lots of free time.
Not only that, but there was a time when men and women teamed up on life. That is to say, because women didn’t have the opportunities in the workplace and men were the “bread winners”, a man could come home from that full time job to dinner cooking in the oven by a loving wife, and so there was no necessity to work outside the home AND cook. Now husband and wife work outside the with nobody home to cook dinner for them coming home.
Somewhere along the way, we really complicated the crap out of life with no benefit to be had for it.
