LEDVANCE has invested millions of dollars to upgrade its Sylvania plant in St. Marys and Walmart has announced a 10-year commitment to buy an additional $250 billion in products that support American jobs.
The news came at a ceremony Thursday where the company celebrated the groundbreaking of the expansion project with local leaders and a representative from the Governors Action Team.
We are continuing to advance light by combining cutting-edge LED lighting technology with the manufacturing and R&D expertise of our U.S. factory workers and engineers, said Jes Munk Hansen, CEO of LEDVANCE. We are the first company in our industry to have a significant LED portfolio like this in the United States, an effort made possible by our first-rate employees. By upgrading our factories and equipment and evolving our business processes, our local workers are bringing light to the nation with modern SYLVANIA LED lighting assembled right here in the U.S.
This initiative transitions 200 jobs from making traditional lighting products, which saw a declining demand, to new LED technology and also adds 20 jobs.
This is an outstanding development, which invests in our local economy and will help to protect and create a total of 220 local jobs, state Sen. Joe Scarnati, R-Brockway, said. Production of Sylvania products has taken place in Pennsylvania for over 100 years. Today the company reiterated the strong relationship they have had with our Commonwealth in the past, and will continue to have in the future. Right here in St. Marys, is the fastest assembly line in the world for LED light bulbs.
State Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin praised the expansion of the St. Marys facility.
Its great to see companies like LEDVANCE driving innovation that not only sustains jobs here in Pennsylvania, but creates them as well, Davin said. Governor Wolf is committed to making Pennsylvania a better place for companies to grow and thrive, so were proud to host this expansion that will further strengthen the manufacturing sector in Elk County.
LED light bulbs made at the St. Marys plant will be distributed to Walmart locations across the country.
Our customers have told us that second to price, where products are made influences their purchase decisions, said Cindi Marsiglio, vice president, U.S. manufacturing, Walmart. We are focused on buying great quality products like SYLVANIA light bulbs that create jobs in communities across the U.S. It makes sense for our customers, our communities and our company.
That would be winning, bigly.
I have decided that I will start buying from WalMart. I’m so impress with how they stepped forward on Harvey, and now this. If they go back to buying more American I will support them
They also drove many American manufactures out of business with their cut all costs, lowest price, cheap chineese made, mentality.
How many blacksmiths, stables, coachbuilders and wheelwrights did Henry Ford put out of business?
With a better American made product maybe he did. Not a cheap plastic piece of crap 10 cent per hour worker made product he didn't.
AWESOME!!!!!
Fair point, but isn’t that the reality of competing in a global economy?
That said didn’t Wall Mart join the others in the chorus of people implying Trump was siding with Nazis?
Just for your info, Sylvania is owned by Osram a German Company. All US Lighting manufacturers (especially light bulbs), have most of their lighting products made out of country and or are largely foreign owned.
Ed
Actually, Ledvance is a Chinese company, using the Sylvania name under license.
Sylvania is owned by Osram...the LED component are all Chinese
From the Ledvance website: “On March 3rd 2017, LEDVANCE has been sold to a Chinese consortium consisting of the investor IDG Capital, the Chinese lighting company MLS Co., Ltd. (MLS) and the financial investor Yiwu State-Owned Assets Operation Center (Yiwu).”
And:
“In the USA and Canada, the well-known and established brand SYLVANIA is used across all product categories. LEDVANCE also has the right to use the OSRAM brand.”
Again, Ledvance is Chinese.
