Reshma Saujani is not a coder but she's empowering "an army of young women" to take on tech's gender gap through her nonprofit Girls Who Code.
"I think that this is an opportunity we have to give every single one of our children," Saujani says in a new episode of CNN's Boss Files with Poppy Harlow. "I think the problem is right now, culturally, images that we see are very male. We have to be thoughtful and think about how can we open the door."
Through Girls Who Code, Saujani is helping to bridge the opportunity gap for young girls through after-school and summer immersion programs. Since 2012, the organization has grown from serving 20 girls in New York to nearly 40,000 girls across the U.S.
Saujani says she has seen firsthand how girls use technology differently than boys to solve big problems.
In a statement that Saujani admits is controversial, she argues that empathy tends to be "uniquely female" and is the primary difference between the problems boys and girls choose to solve with the technologies they create.
Saujani recounts when two young female students -- Lucy and Maya -- "built an app [about] lead poisoning because they saw that kids were dying in Flint, Michigan." She also recalls a bunch of girls in Austin who built a tool back in June 2016 to track where Zika was going "because Congress couldn't get it together to pass a bill for funding." (Congress eventually passed a bill in September 2016 to help fight the Zika virus and study its effects).
Men, on the other hand, create companies "to replace their mothers," says Saujani, who is herself the mother of a two year old boy.....

Well, there you have it. If some women would be better mothers, then we wouldn't have this problem. What's wrong with women??!!!
Right. And, feminist woman demand more government to be their surrogate husband.
Oh BS.
This woman is clueless. I write software because I like to BUILD things and create - something you’d think she’d have an understanding of (and i bet not)
What nonsense! There are absolutely no differences between the sexes. None. Nada. Zilch.
And if you differ with me I will dox you and get you fired from your job.
Modern women are just playing the part of their curse from the garden:
Genesis 3:16
To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
:: Men, on the other hand, create companies “to replace their mothers ::
No, Reshmah you stupid cow, men marry women with large breasts to replace their mothers.
So men made machines to carry heavy loads, to dig the earth, to harvest crops, to communicate across continents and oceans simply to “replace their mothers?”
This *itch ain’t gotta clue. De-Evolution in progress, folks.
Men love to build and create. It’s in our nature.
Says Feminazis who declare that they need a man like a fish needs a bicycle.
Males are better coders.
They somehow have the ability to enter and become the machine.
It’s hard to explain but it’s true.
Ever meet a female who could write asm anywhere near the level of a master like Wozniac? NO, you haven’t, and neither has anyone else.
No sense in lying about these things.
Good luck there. I haven’t worked since 2009.
These organizations are obsessed with being negative towards guys.
Not being sexist but every Indian woman I ever worked with except one was an emotional train wreck in the workplace.
After years of being treated as third class persons by their own country, many seem to think it is fair game to take it out on American men.
Probably an 11 on the woman crazy index.
1. Empathy is not uniquely feminine.
2. Too much empathy without consideration of root causes and actual solutions leads to enabling. Empathy is not in and of itself a virtue, much less sacred solution to everything.
3. IT is wide open to women, and there are preferences for women on everything to funding to college acceptance to jobs. Women are choosing to stay away from it because they prefer NOT to work 60-80 hours a week, in any profession, while that’s the expectation in STEM.
4. Blaming patriarchal oppression for everything is a conspiracy theory that makes men want to avoid women, while affirmative action and promoting unqualified people to fill quotas, results in the biases that some women do still encounter.
Before anyone screams this is sexist, I am a woman with an engineering degree and a decade in IT. With children.
And I laugh at anyone who assumes as sacred truth women are more kind, caring, empathetic all the time. Did you miss middle school? Did you miss the queen bees who engage in social exclusion and abuse from elementary school to play groups with other parents? The working mom versus stay at home mom arguments, the “you didn’t feed the baby organic? that’s child abuse” or “breast is best, you’re evil if you don’t” bullying that often goes on.
That’s all aside from liberals saying all real women are feminists/liberal, and authorizing abuse of conservative women as traitors to the tribe.
I agree with you on points 1 thru 4. Well put!
My sister is profoundly deaf and has always been a stay-at-home mom of three fine young American adults. She’s told me how her peers treat her as though she’s a child herself. Little do they know how intelligent she is. I ought to know because I’m her big brother!
