The Rutherford Institute and the ACLU of Virginia filed suit against the city on behalf of Kessler, the alt right member that organized the "unite the right" event.

The city revoked his permit while allowing permits held by counter protestors to remain.

So there's your first civil liberties violation.

Kessler won an injunction to allow the original permit to stand.

The complaint is a good read. You can clearly see the mayor, lt mayor, and city council were picking the side of the counter protestors.

If there was an injunction allowing the permit and then, the mayor shut down the protest anyway and called it “unpermitted”, should the mayor and city council be punished for ‘contempt of court’?
