Why is the government so bad at healthcare? Theyve been at it for seventy-five years and still cant get it right. Its expensive. Access is spotty. Its mired in bureaucracy. And its fraught with waste.
Obamacare was supposed to fix all this, but instead, like every other government healthcare program before it, it just made things worse.
Why? Because the government is a third-party payer. Let me explain.
Suppose you are going to buy something for yourself. You have two priorities: price and quality. You want the highest quality for the lowest possible price.
Say youre buying a television. You have many options: the size of the screen, the quality of the image, the price. Only you know which one best suits your needs and your budget. And a lot of companies are competing for your business. You do your research; you make your choice.
This is called a first-party purchase the person paying is the person using.
Now, lets suppose that either the price or quality is not controlled by you; in this case, you are buying something for someone else. You care about the price because you are paying for it, but you are a little more flexible on the quality. A good example would be a wedding gift say, a coffee maker.
You might think, by the time it breaks theyll forget who gave it to them anyway the cheaper one will be fine.
All of us have bought things for others we never would have bought for ourselves. We care about the price because were paying for it, but not so much about the quality because were not going to use it.
Or, suppose that were going to use something, but were not going to pay for it. Then were concerned about the quality because...

Why is it that everyone (GOP and Democrat) are fixated on the term “fix”?
I can’t think of a single area of law passage in the past one-hundred years that has basically accomplished anything of a fixed-nature. At best, they simply renovate a problem to the degree that it still exists but looks better than the old problem. Yet, it’s still ‘broke’.
As long as you say Medicaid and Health Care in the same breath, it can’t be fixed. It’s one big subsidized system and will remain as such.
Related: the government cannot fix the education system.
Like health ins, the problem and solution are with the individual, the family... the govt can only bandaid the problem and then totally mess it up. Like The Three Stooges Plumbing.
Good explanation. Just wish the font was larger on the site for these older eyeballs!
Plus, the government is always inefficient and bureaucratic no matter what it does. That’s the nature of any giant organization. Frankly, it boggles my mind how much faith people have in government to get things done. There are some jobs governments must do, of course, but it’s always inefficient.
Identify the true cost drivers, and address those issues, and you can have affordable medicine, and less involvement by government — especially by the court system.
“... fixated on the term fix ...”
I agree.
The only thing worse is the notion of “protecting” the awful federals programs (SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc)
Trump is guilty of this as well.
If these folks ever read the Declaration of Independence they would, maybe, learn to do their real job and protect our God-given individual freedoms FROM these programs.
Just make it bigger
Healthcare is fine. It is the government mucking up how to pay for it and access to it that is the problem.

I’m reading it on my phone, it doesn’t seem to work quite as well. But thanks for the info.
