This is not new. In the 60s everyone was going bananas wondering how the Soviet Union put up Sputnik, the first satellite, before the US did. The CIA decided it was due in part to their advances in mathematics, especially Control Theory (which turned out to be a small twist on the Calculus of Variations developed at the University of Chicago in the 30s).

I was assigned to review a new book that had been released — Stochastic Control Theory. I discovered that the first 80 pages did nothing more than make the case that: even though Communism [according to Marx] was based on the proven fact that there was no such thing as randomness, that the world was pre-determined ... the world is so complicated that not all causes can be identified, that sometimes it is useful to use a mathematical fiction to simplify calculations by pretending there is randomness. Those 80 pages were needed to convince the Soviet Union Scientific Council the control theory was compatible with Communism. 80 pages.

I read somewhere that in ancient Rome (or was it Greece?) that an architect of a bridge was made to stand under his creation when it was first put into use, to assure that it would hold up and not collapse on him.
