7 deadliest jobs in the world: Besides high risk involved, these also feature long hours & low pay

Dubai: The deadliest jobs also tend to be ones with low pay and crazy hours, in addition to the high risk. These jobs are common to almost every country in the world, as they are professions we cannot really do without for a functioning economy.

Many of these occupations, however, do not apply to the UAE except for construction workers, truck drivers and sanitation workers. In an online poll conducted a few years ago, voters rated firefighters and high-rise window cleaners as being in the deadliest jobs in the UAE.

Lumberjacks

Workers dealing in the initial harvesting and transportation of trees have the deadliest jobs in the world, owing to their proximity to heavy logs and dangerous machinery. They also work very long hours.

Fishermen

Deep-sea fishing job ranks high in risk factors such as unpredictable weather changes, extreme temperatures and unstable boats. According to a research by America’s Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), the fatality risk of an Alaskan crab fisherman is 80 times that of an average worker in any job.

Bush pilots

Flying on commercial airlines is one of the safest modes of transportation even if the pilots have to deal with some unpredictability in weather conditions. Bush pilots, however, have one of the most dangerous jobs due to the size of the planes, hostile weather and terrain, and uneven landing grounds.

Miners

Accidents in mining sites are quite usual, the most common being flooding, leading to collapse of mined tunnels, and gas explosions from built-up methane gas underground. Mining can also lead to many chronic health conditions resulting from over-exposure to toxic metals, gases and other substances.

Sanitation workers and recyclers

Most of us would be surprised to see this job here but BLS reports show that a garbage collector is more likely to die in the course of his or her job than police on patrol duty. They are exposed to all levels and kinds of hazardous materials. Many are paid well for their service owing to this high risk and the overall nature of the job.

Construction and metal workers

In this category, we have included construction labourers and, steel and iron or metal workers. Construction occupations include carpenters, electricians, plumbers, pipe fitters and steamfitters. At a whopping 937, this industry had the highest rate of fatal work injuries in 2015 in America. Metal workers also deal with dangerous machinery and extreme heat, often being exposed to various chemicals over long periods of time.

Truck drivers

Not only are they involved in more than half of all fatal transportation incidents, a truck driver’s job pays very less considering the hours, risk and labour involved. America recorded 745 fatal injuries among truck and tractor drivers, the most out of any occupation surveyed for a BLS report published in 2016.

I heard my proctologist mumble after a recent visit, that the job was killing him.

How many road construction people are killed?

How many innocent people are killed by 18 wheelers?

How many are killed by illegal drunk drivers?

...in the world

would do well to include the rest of the world. Barefoot teenagers in loin-cloths breaking and salvaging container ships on muddy Indian shores, dodging falling iron, contracting tetanus as a matter of course and working pre-dawn til deep into the night have a job that's slightly more dangerous than your average teamster's.

Mining today is a lot different than it was when I took up the profession and even drastically safer than when my Dad began. That said, the safety and working condition improvements prinarily apply to America, Canada, Scandinavia, and Australia. Mines in other, usually third world countries have drastically improved improved records if the parent company is an international miner but not like the first world mines.

Coal is inherently very dangerous due to the nature of the gassy deposits and black lung though the black lung danger depends on the individual and the enforcement of rules.

Pay can be very high compared with other similar professions. Open pit equipment operators are just that, equipment operations. Underground mines have modernized drastically and the pay is very good with Canadian miners pulling in hundreds of thousands when they are contract bonus miners.

My advise, don’t go to work in China and some South American and African mines.

They left out Information Technology. Sure, with the onset of digital information, the risk of paper cuts has been considerably reduced. But there's the ever-present threat of carpal tunnel, presbyopia, and obesity.

Sitting at a desk in an air-conditioned office all day isn't for the faint of heart or limp of limb.

I had health insurance once, went in for “the” checkup.

Dr. Simon snapped the glove, and asked me to bend over. I said: Is that Simon says?

He didn’t laugh...

My goodness, how can you call this a list when you forgot military and law enforcement. These guys and gals put their life on the line every time they slip on the uniform. And I can promise you, it isn’t for the money.

And besides, military is exposed to all kinds of things designed and deployed to kill them and they still remove mines manually on most occasions , EOD. As Patton said, “No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making some other poor dumb bastard die for his country.” If you don’t shoot it, blow it up. That’s their job.

Those are all mens’ jobs. If it is hard, dirty, dangerous work that has to be done it is done by a man.

**How many innocent people are killed by 18 wheelers?**

I don’t know, but I’ve seen plenty of accidents that were caused by “4 wheelers”, that killed truck drivers.

The one situation that is occasionally fatal is where on a multi lane metropolitan road, one or more 4 wheelers realize that, “oh, there’s room in that lane”, and move over quickly, robbing the semi driver his safe spacing behind traffic already in his lane.

I’ve had that happen to me more times than I could count. And I’m sure that a few of those instances were car drivers looking for a “payday”: hit the brakes, get tail ended, get a check (they don’t tend to do it at high rural speeds; after all they aren’t looking to get serious bodily harm or death.)

My God, you took the words out of my mind.

The worst was being awaken in the middle of the night when a payment blew up and I had to drive into work and fix it. That was in the good old main frame days. Now I wouldn't even have to eave my bed to fix it, but since I am retired no more phone calls.

Saw mills are insane. Slaughter houses can be dangerous too. My vote goes for roughnecks.

Hey, we’re good. Both the ladies and the gentlemen complement me on my flights and say they’re glad to see me up front. Should we get an idiot on board I just yell and cry and scream and throw a tantrum saying this plane ain’t goin’ no where if they don’t leave.
