Amazon jobs grow from 700 to 1,000 ($15 to $33 hr. in Maryland)

NORTH EAST — The Amazon fulfillment center in Principio Business Park originally projected to hire 700 people, but the company recently expanded its job openings to 1,000, according to recruiters manning the company’s tent at the Cecil County Fair.

The growth occurs as the company expands its offerings. Last month, the e-commerce giant bought the Whole Foods company.

Wages for fulfillment positions will range from $15 to $33 an hour, based on experience and performance.

Chris Moyer, county director of economic development, and Bruce England, executive director of the Susquehanna Workforce Network, first confirmed the news at a Republican Club of Cecil County meeting at Minihane’s Pub and Restaurant in Elkton last week.

“Amazon — they projected 700 jobs. It’s actually going to be 1,000 jobs,” Moyer said at the meeting. “They posted the first wave of job openings on July 6. 1,700 people applied for those few hundred positions. The company is overwhelmed by the response they’ve been receiving.”

The news marks another positive development in the county’s upcoming economic development. News first broke in January that Amazon would construct a fulfillment center in North East. That development was preceded by news that Lidl, a German grocer, and TRUaire, a Harford County manufacturer of grilles and fans, would expand into Cecil County.

Another recent addition is Fortress Steel, a steel manufacturer relocating from Newark, Del., to Elkton, which will occupy the building at 1001 Konica Drive in the Upper Chesapeake Corporate Center.

“They’re really excited to be here, and we’re really excited to have them here as well,” Moyer said.

Talk continues about the addition of another business coming to Cecil County, potentially bringing 450 jobs. Further details may come this week. Another business is potentially in the pipeline behind that one.

“It’s speculative at this point,” Moyer said Thursday. “We’re working with a couple very large prospects, and we should know by a week from now if we got the one, and the other one will be a little further out.”

Amazon.com needs a strong competitor. Right now it’s the only kid on the block. Freepers need to stop loving on Jeff Bezos so much.
