Nuts.com plans to create 150 jobs at new Jersey City facility (New Jersey)

Nuts.com, a Cranford-based, third-generation distributor of nuts and other snacks, said it plans to create 150 new jobs when it opens a state-of-the-art corporate office in Jersey City with help from some state incentives.

“My grandfather established this company in New Jersey 88 years ago, and we’re excited to continue his legacy and execute on our vision of offering the highest-quality product, with excellent customer service and dynamic employment opportunities,” Jeffrey Braverman, CEO of Nuts.com, said.

Following the approval of Grow New Jersey tax credits by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority on Thursday, the family-owned and -operated company will maintain its primary manufacturing and distribution operations in Cranford, where it currently employs 158, and invest millions to create a high-tech workspace within a 24,000-square-foot space in Jersey City for its marketing, creative and sales teams.

“We applaud Nuts.com’s commitment to investing and growing in the state,” Melissa Orsen, CEO of the NJEDA, said. “The Braverman family represents a longstanding New Jersey small business success story, and the new, skilled jobs the company will create will add to its legacy of job creation and community engagement.”

Sol Braverman established The Newark Nut Co. in 1929 in Newark as a then-open-air vendor that sourced its products directly from growers and roasted fresh for every order. The company survived the Great Depression, World War II and a firebombing during the riots of 1967 before being relocated by the city of Newark into a small indoor retail store in 1984.

Ken Braverman and Sandy Braverman were worried that their father’s retail business would suffer. Then, in 1999, Ken Braverman’s son, Jeffrey, suggested that the family launch Nuts.com before he joined the family business full-time as CEO in 2003.

In 2005, the company again was asked to relocate by the city of Newark due to the construction of the Prudential Center — a move that spurred it to move into a 15,000-square-foot warehouse in Linden.

Five years of 50 percent annual growth later, Nuts.com voluntarily relocated to its current 100,000-square-foot building in Cranford, where not only do programmers write proprietary code for all the operating, sorting, organizing, labeling and shipping that is done within the facility, but employees hand-fill more than 30,000 one-pound bags each day.

Good for that community. More jobs are coming their way.
That reminds me of a tiny store that used to be in downtownw Detroit, near the Fox Theater called “The Nut House”. They sold peanuts, candy apples and some of the best caramel corn I’ve ever tasted. The whole interior smelled like popcorn and , peanuts and melted caramel. Nowadays, the county may not grant a business license to any place using that phrase ‘Nut House’.
I hope they haven’t lost their sense of humor to that degree.

Who in their right mind would build a business in New Jersey (or Illinois, or California . . .)? That’s like sleeping in a jungle with your private parts exposed over night. The mosquitoes (blood sucking politicians - same thing) are going to make you regret that decision.
