“Hosting the Olympics has become a pretty decent proxy for identifying the current and future failed states of the world...”
Sochi is doing well.
Maybe I should qualify by saying Summer Olympics.
That is true, BobL. But LA in 1984 had far stronger leadership than it does now, and its infrastructure was not in nearly so terrible shape as it is now.
Basically LA and Paris will host the Olympics again in 2024 and 2028. The IOC has proposed that each city will host one of them since those are the only two left for 2024 after Budapest dropped out. The only question left is who will go first in 2024. If LA gets 2024 then Trump can open them if he gets reelected. If not them whoever is POTUS in 2028.
They’ll just raise state and local taxes; it’s their solution to everything.
Oh goody goody....
Wow a city with a massive population of unassimilated, pro terrorist immigrants what could go wrong?
A “temporary” tax will solve all the problems.
Like that Spanish war tax on telephones we had or still have.
Eventually the Olympics will be spread out between several countries. It’s the only economically feasible approach. Cities no longer want to even bid on the Games because they realize it’s a losing proposition for one city to take it on.
......and the band played on....
I guess they will do that if it is feasible (Benelux countries, for example - the venues could still be close together). I was surprised the 2002 World Cup was hosted in South Korea and Japan, but I believe that paid handsome dividends in terms of selling soccer in those countries.
And now the US, Canada and Mexico are proposing to jointly host the 2026 World Cup.
That would be interesting; I know the US and Mexico have already hosted so they each have the facilities. I actually think the co-hosting would be a bad idea, simply because of the climate changes between these countries. Heck, even when we hosted Irish fans were bitching because they played in the NJ Meadowlands (which is hot enough for them) and then Florida...they had no chance at all!
