It’s a rapidly expanding ghetto slum inland a little ways from the Jersey shore. It has an exploding Hasidic population, exploding illegal alien population and long term ghetto population. It’s not a really city, it’s slum suburb on the outer fringes of the NYC metro area that has been overbuilt with apartments and filled with poor people on welfare. It’s basically like an American version of a favela, but not that violent.
Lakewood is now causing major problems for the state due to the extremely high use of government services by its residents and massive tax evasion. It’s becoming a fiscal black hole for the state, that’s why they are starting to crack down. This is also about high housing prices pushing poor people in the massive NYC metropolis to these “ghettos in the woods” on the edges of the region where property is less expensive. So a lot of the long term welfare families have been relocated from NYC proper to these kinds of places.
