I never completely bought the official version of Miller’s demise. But the above seems even less likely. Why would Ike send a musician - of all people - on such a sensitive and important mission?
Nope, not buying it.

Or why would the Germans set up a propaganda victory and never use it?

I can see why an American celebrity who speaks German might be chosen to communicate with Germans who wanted to end the war, but I cannot buy the story.

"Why would Ike send a musician - of all people - on such a sensitive and important mission?" Hmmm … maybe Miller was a double-naught spy?

Nope, not buying it. The first clue for me was the url for the website this story came from... MILITARYCORRUPTION.COM. No hidden agenda there... Some of the other headlines on the site seem equally far fetched.

Why would Ike send a musician - of all people - on such a sensitive and important mission? Who else would you send if you were wanting the Germans to change their tune? [rimshot]

Why would Ike send a musician - of all people - on such a sensitive and important mission? Great cover! It was commonplace to use wealthy celebrities as spies. For example, Julia Child was an OSS agent operating in the Mediterranean region. Her cover was study of the region's cuisine. Did you ever see her cooking show on TV?

The standard story is that he was on the small plane to France to perform for troops. Seems right, given his prewar fame.
I think the spy rumor was just fiction for morale and motivation.
