Edward Crawford, an activist known for throwing a tear gas canister back at police officers in a viral photo during the 2014 unrest in Ferguson, Missouri was found dead on Thursday, May 4, from what police officers are describing as a self-inflicted gun wound. Crawford had participated in the protests that followed the death of Michael Brown at the hand of Officer Darren Wilson. According to the St. Louis Police Department, the 27-year-old shot himself in the head after talking with two women about "personal matters." Crawford's father disputes the claims, telling the St. Louis Post Dispatch that his son was in good spirits when he saw him two days prior, and believes that the shooting was accidental. Ferguson police are "being hush hush" about his son's death, he said.
The Root reported that Crawford's passing is the latest in an unusual trend of Ferguson-affiliated protestors turning up dead in vehicles. Deandre Joshua, 20, was the first to be found shot in a parked vehicle in 2014. Deandre's body was found in the same apartment complex where Michael Brown lived, and the case remains an open homicide investigation. His grandmother told USA Today that she has little hope in the police investigating his case. "The police don't care," she said, "He's black."
Additionally, Darren Seals, an vocal activist who spoke about the social issues in Ferguson and the St. Louis community, was found dead on September 6, 2016 from a gunshot wound inside of a vehicle, which was also set on fire. The 26-year-old had previously joined local anti-gun violence activists and dedicated his life to serving the community. According to the St. Louis County Police Department, his death was ruled as a homicide, yet his murder remains unsolved.

Is it really unusual for gang bangers to wind up dead in St. Louis? It certainly isn't unusual in Chicago given the black on black crime rate.

Dear Mom and Dad and all my friends:
I’m sorry to end things like this - but I fought the good fight, and lost. Those halcyon days of yore - fighting in the streets to set our people free. But there is no “Free at last, Free at last.” The “Man” has too strong of a grip on us - beating us down. I’m beat down. The struggle is too much. Somebody stronger than me will need to carry the torch.

Sooner or later they’ll all be dead.
Life is cheap in the ‘hood’ when the life is gang life.
The thing is I can see how a smart person stuck in that gang life rut who can’t see a way out might become suicidal.
Once they have that felon tag on them, and who doesn’t in that life, options become extremely limited.
Moral of the story, don’t do stupid things, don’t get a criminal record (especially after 16), and get through high school so options like a trade school or college for those inclined; are still on the table.
This is one of those times it’s okay to think ‘only by the grace of God that isn’t me’ because I had parents that cared and doubly lucky they stayed married and together even to this day.
There were hundreds of “protestors” - some professional criminals and others professional rioters. They have chosen high-risk occupations, so it is no surprise when several of them die. I’m okay with that.

Blame “The Great Society” and the welfare state. In 1960, single family homes for whites and blacks was 9% and 20%, respectively. Today it is 25 - 30% whites, and 65 to 72% for blacks.
So the odds that Mr. Crawford did not play a presence in his children’s lives is high. Of course the chance for any relationship with his four kids is gone for good due to his selfishness.
