I hear that .44, well said. Bears are around up here....and you had better be prepared. Firearm wise, awareness wise and everything else wise for that matter when outside. They are unpredictable as heck when they see you or you see them.

Bear is on top, you are getting mauled and playing dead may or may not help. Take the shots. A guy killed a grizzly mauling him with an arrow. After the first ass-whuppin you still don't shoot? The bear may kill me, but I will have no ammo left in the gun.

You need a nervous system hit. Spine or brain.

To kill the bear, unknown what it would've took to dissuade her long enough to get clear.

Certainly wouldn't disagree with that. Sounds like his gun had been knocked away in the 2nd attack, wonder where it was in the first. Accessable or not.

“That’s true, but may be a function of the fact that a large majority, so the scientists say, will break off at about 10 yards. Bluff charges. I’ve no reason to disbelieve that. But bear do charge through spray, as in this case. Non bluff charges.”

They also charge through gunfire. We also don’t know the caliber of the pistol, how good he was with it, how paniced he was etc. Think of it this way, if you use bear spray and it works then the incident is over and you have a cool story. If you fire at the bear you now have a wounded/dead bear that must be reported, investigated and dealt with.

“Bear is on top, you are getting mauled and playing dead may or may not help. Take the shots.”

The “experts” recommend playing dead unless the bear is predatory (ie. wants to eat you). Since the sow had cubs she was likely defending them. In this instance the bear is going to keep attacking you until you are motionless and not considered a threat. The more you fight the more she will tear you up until you are dead.

A grizzly mauling is an inexact science with uncertain outcomes. Using an adequate sidearm can end the threat or convince ma to go elsewhere.

Plenty of grizzlies maulings turn into predatory behavior as the bear gets into it; many examples from Glacier Park. Since the bear doesn't fill out a survey prior to the attack, a victim can't be sure of the bear's intentions. Successful man/bear encounters shouldn't rely on a bear just 'mauling' since those can end up fatal even if the bear has no 'intent'. As a result discounting any attempts to kill the bear just because it is hard to do or it is just going to 'maul' me is a poor plan. One becomes reliant on the bear to make a 'reasoned' and proportional attack. It isn't reliable because all bears aren't the same and even if they were are too good at what they do.

IMO your reasoning is flawed but as I always say “A man ought to do what he thinks is best”.

Perhaps, but counting on a reasoned approach from a bear is flawed. In their territory best to come prepared to kill them.

The threat and attendant adrenaline surges doesn’t help.

Yes, a knowledgeable CC instructor was talking about someone coming at you with a knife...He said said that within a certain range, one shot rarely causes perps to stop...the adrenaline kicks in and the perp keeps coming. Guessing that it may be the same with an enraged sow?

Wonder if using combo of bear spray and this taser might work better, but I have never used one.

Old Eskimo guide named Field Johnson survived a double grizzly attack, and went insane. This guy’s already insane.
